30 Day Song Challenge

Updated on March 18, 2013

It seems that in the past few years people got bored of the vast amount of things they can do on the world wide web. Perhaps not bored, just in a need of more challenges, new games which would keep them occupied and tickle their brain cells on daily basis.

Naturally, there is always stuff do online. There are games on the net which are available to the public, either independently or hosted by the ultra popular Facebook platform. There are quiz sites which steal hours and hours of your day. Or funny and shocking web portals with articles featuring 3legged bird, a human cactus, etc. Let’s not even go into the new Ig Olympic sport of youtube video hopping.

And then we have the “xy day challenge” chains which can be viewed as a sort of a game where participants do not really interact, but in a way feed of each others determination to complete the challenge, stay in the game the longest and be one of the lucky few who can boast in the end by proclaiming “Woohoo! I am my own personal hero. I completed the challenge! Only me and 3 more people in the whole wide world!”

Ok, I know I am exaggerating a bit, but you get my point, right?

I was never really into those challenges, mainly because all the above stated activities occupied 100% of my personal time. However, just the other day I came across one which drew my attention and my inner voice said “Yes! Finally! Something for me!” At the same time lazy part of my personality was screaming “No! Don’t even start it! It would be a waste of time. You know you’ll never finish it! Why even bother?”

This is where the lazy part’s true laziness and lack of dedication to planning and scheming came to full view. The defiant part of my personality decided to rise up to the challenge, slap the other back with a leather glove, and prove, once and for all eternity, that there is more to me than just being a procrastination champion of the universe. “Bring it on!” it seemed to say, in a true cheerleading-rivalry-teen-movie kind of way.

So what is this challenge I am talking about?

It's the 30 day song challenge on Facebook!

Not too many people are doing the challenge at this point. Only around 24k people are fans, which in Facebook talk is as good as none.

The challenge is to come up with one song per day, post it to your wall (at the same time linking it to the challenge wall, by adding @ at the beginning) and that’s that. Well, not really.

As in any good challenge there are rules which have to be followed. The trick is to post a song a day following the below timeline.

day 01 - your favorite song

day 02 - your least favorite song

day 03 - a song that makes you happy

day 04 - a song that makes you sad

day 05 - a song that reminds you of someone

day 06 - a song that reminds you of somewhere

day 07 - a song that reminds you of a certain event

day 08 - a song that you know all the words to

day 09 - a song that you can dance to

day 10 - a song that makes you fall asleep

day 11 - a song from your favorite band

day 12 - a song from a band you hate

day 13 - a song that is a guilty pleasure

day 14 - a song that no one would expect you to love

day 15 - a song that describes you

day 16 - a song that you used to love but now hate

day 17 - a song that you hear often on the radio

day 18 - a song that you wish you heard on the radio

day 19 - a song from your favorite album

day 20 - a song that you listen to when you’re angry

day 21 - a song that you listen to when you’re happy

day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad

day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding

day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral

day 25 - a song that makes you laugh

day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument

day 27 - a song that you wish you could play

day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty

day 29 - a song from your childhood

day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year

Easy enough, right?

In retrospect, I have to admit, yes ... yes it is.

Especially for a FB maniac like myself. However, when you add a sense of responsibility into the picture, the challenge is as good as nil in my books. Thankfully, I have the power of defiance somewhere in me.

Power of music

Psychology of Music: From Sound to Significance
Psychology of Music: From Sound to Significance

What gives music its deep emotional significance and its power to influence social behavior, across vastly different cultural contexts?

However, there is a twist to all this. A deeper meaning hidden in this challenge that came to me in a moment of perfect lucidity. I’m not sure that even the creators of this challenge thought of that.

Basically, by choosing a song of the day as per the above mentioned rules, you are digging through your personality, the subconscious part of yourself and exposing that to the world.

It’s been my theory that people can be defined as particular genres of music for a long time now. Here, we go a little bit deeper and are showing everyone what tickles us, what we react to, what makes us who we are. By listening to the music and the lyrics they can see our innermost thoughts, feelings and really get to know us.

In the end, this is what made me join this challenge. I wanted by friends to finally see me for who I am, not just as the “funky weirdo” sort of person everyone expects to see. Correction: “funky weirdo with ever fabulous hair.” :)

Finally, I decided to share that, share myself with the rest of you hubbers as well by adding a twist to the challenge.

In addition to posting songs on Facebook, I’ll post them here as well. Each will contain a short description of the song, as well as why it was chosen; why it makes me tick, react the way I do.

Double challenge, I know, but let’s see which side of me will win. Will it be the lazy ass part or the defiant little bugger?

Hopefully, some of you will be interested in getting to know me through the power of music.

Maybe, some of you will be even willing to join me on my quest, and “expose” yourselves as well.

Wish me luck and stay tuned! Daily updates will follow!

Update 29/02/2012

As it turned out I did not complete the challenge on HubPages.

Facebook one was a success.

However, I saw that lots of people did start the challenge here, so if nothing else I left my mark, however small, on here. :)

I love music and I love your post! I think I'm going to take the 30 day music challenge..when I read down the list of days i was already picking out songs. When I listen to music, its an escape, and I feel the music and its a very emotional process to listen to a song and experience it the way I do. If I get a new album, I cant listen to it willy-nilly, I have to set aside time to absorb it. But I think that's because I'm very right brained... it's not just a song to me, it's a memory.

      Awesome post!

Great idea! My only worry is that my taste in music varies and my favourties change with the day. But perhaps I'll accept the challenge anyway. It's a great bench mark for yourself, and, say a year from now you can see whether those have stayed the same.

Fascinating concept. I'm partially interested. It seems like a lot of work...and I just finished the 30 hubs in 30 day challenge,(successfully, I might add, LOL)

Yep, I'm one of those you described above that said, "I did it, I did it!"

That was tough enough. BUT...if I do take the challenge then I will write the hub and post it on FB like I usually do...I am not clear about what challenge FB is having.

So...Karanda started the challenge along with you; let me look over the list first and consider it, LOL

      Good luck.

This is a great idea. I'm surprised you haven't many other Hubbers jumping on board. Best of luck in your challenge - I hope the defiant one shines through.
