5 Action Movies that top my action movie list

Updated on September 7, 2011

There are likely dozens of movies that could make the top of a list like this one, there are so many action movies out there. A few of the ones I picked out below are less about the specific movie then they are about the series that has made up the brand. Readers may argue that out of the three Jason Bourne movies only one really stands out, but for me I tend to group movies together once I've seen them all. Note that they are not in any order.

Jason Bourne

The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum together make up the first entry in my list. When Jason wakes up at the beginning of the first movie and eventually is healed he goes out into the world to try and find some answers. In his first physical encounter he handles himself with such amazing skill and speed he amazes himself in his own ability. Matt Damon does a terrific job in playing Bourne all throughout the three movies. His quick thinking, his resolve and determination and his skills all make this a terrific group of movies. Wikipedia says that Matt Damon would do a fourth but only on the condition that director Paul Greengrass returns, which Greengrass has indicated he won't.

Die Hard

John McClane is a NY cop held up in an LA skyscraper as it is being robbed; with no way out McClane makes use of his acumen to foil the plans of the robbers. In the subsequent movies he is alone against large groups in tight or closed situations save for 'Live Free or Die Hard' where he is up against a mobile terrorist group. Bruce Willis plays McClane and gives him a grit and strength that really rounds out the character. He is under such threat and such tremendous odds it really becomes quite the action thriller to see how he makes it through to the end.

For the longest time I would use The Terminator as the action movie to which all other action movies would compare. When this movie first came out it was so advanced and so raw it really set the stage for other action movies to come. When T2 came out, with the T1000 played by Robert Patrick, the special effects were astounding. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays The Terminator that in the first movie is out to kill Sarah Connor (played by Linda Hamilton) to prevent her son from being born to go on and lead a revolution against the machines. In T2 Schwarzenegger plays the same Terminator role but it was reprogrammed to protect John Connor (Edward Furlong). Robert Patrick's role as the T1000 was fantastic - he knew exactly how to move to make the T1000 look just slightly off. His morphing special effects also made this a captivating movie.

Casino Royale

Daniel Craig takes up the role of James Bond in this 21st Bond film. There is a particular scene in this movie that has me adding this movie to this hub. It has been a while since I've seen it, however, the opening scene has him chasing a free runner and that whole scene from beginning to end is very impressive in how the two characters get from place to place. In one specific part of it the Bond character runs through a wall, but it isn't that to which I am referring, but rather, immediately before that there is a scene where you just see him running, and the way it is filmed, the way he runs, makes him the fastest runner I think I've ever seen in a movie. Take a look at this scene if you see the movie some time, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Lethal Weapon

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover play police partners in a series of movies that are filled with action and humourous dialog between the two. The characters they play each have their own personality quirks that make them human and believable. Typically the two of them uncover large plots that put themselves and their families and homes in jeopardy. How they handle themselves and the situation they find themselves in make this a terrific series to watch.

There are a bunch of others that I would consider, I'll list just a few of them here:

  • Predator with Arnold Schwarzenegger, great search and destroy movie
  • The Fugitive with Harrison Ford - great chase movie
  • The Matrix - innovative idea and filming
  • Aliens Trilogy - perhaps the scariest action movies

Are there any action movies that would be at the top of your list that I have't mentioned here? Let me know in the comments.

This hub does get some good traffic; people like to talk about movies. As for the inane elgooG, I can live with it, or without it.

Hey Phil. It seems that this was determined to be your best hub which kind of makes me think that "elgoog" which is not a palindrome but only works ONE WAY could be inane.

I haven't seen Ronin in a long time, but figure it should probably also be included in this list. Body of Lies I haven't seen, I'll check it out. Thanks for stopping by!

I think the Bourne movies really revolutionized the action genre. They are so gritty, smart, and (at least somewhat) more realistic. I think the directors/producers went the same direction with Casino Royale, and it paid big dividends. Another couple of great action flicks along these same lines are Ronin and Body of Lies.

BB, thanks for stopping by - I just watch the whole series of them a few weeks ago. Even the first one still holds well from so long ago.

I love Die Hard! Bruce Willis just oozes his manly charm all over the show. I also like Mission Impossible as well.

I haven't seen Hellboy II so I can't review it. I've got another idea for a movie hub but I need to see a few more movies to be able to finish it.

HSB, I haven't seen Alien in quite some time, I intend on seeing it again to see if it still thrills the same way. Thanks for stopping by!

Deb, I also really enjoyed Die Hard 4, one or two of the scenes weren't quite believable, but hey, what can you do? I don't watch horror movies so I won't be hubbing about that.

Die Hard 4.0 would be a favourite of mine. Also enjoyed the Transporter movies.

Are you going to do Horror next?

You are right about Alien being a scary movie. That was the one that did me in on scary movies. I have not gone to the theatre to see another scary movie since. And have watched only a couple on TV, like The Shining.

But the movies you listed were all good ones.

I just saw Inception a few days ago and would definitely agree. Like I said at the top of this hub, there are so many, it is hard to choose. Thanks for stopping by!

It is tough to narrow it down to one film, but for a list like this, I would've picked one film per series. I like all the movies you mentioned except Predator (which for whatever reason didn't do it for me), and of course, the Alien series ended at Aliens (right??).

I have yet to construct a list myself, but in addition to the films you mentioned and off the top of my head: Enemy of the State, Heat, Man on Fire, Ronin, Goldeneye, and Inception. There's only so many slots on a list like that, but I would've considered those.

Thanks Kevin - I agree about the abyss, it was a good suspense movie, but not really an action as compared to the others.

Phil: I must say- you have done it again! I also like the movies that "Susan" listed - but the Abyss? I liked that movie but don't remember it as an action movie. Well done! Voted up! Kevin

Das, yes, Indiana Jones and of course Star Wars, but I think those belong on a different list.

Susan, I haven't seen 'The Wrestler', but the other ones I agree. Maybe another would be 'Fight Club'.

I like all the movies in your list. Here are some that I also like

      Kill Bill 1 & 2

      The Wrestler

      The Abyss

      Mission Impossible

I could go on and on but I will stop here. :)

All of these are great films. I would have added Indiana Jones to the list though.
