5 Action Movies that top my action movie list

Updated on September 7, 2011

Introduction

There are likely dozens of movies that could make the top of a list like this one, there are so many action movies out there. A few of the ones I picked out below are less about the specific movie then they are about the series that has made up the brand. Readers may argue that out of the three Jason Bourne movies only one really stands out, but for me I tend to group movies together once I've seen them all. Note that they are not in any order.

Jason Bourne

The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum together make up the first entry in my list. When Jason wakes up at the beginning of the first movie and eventually is healed he goes out into the world to try and find some answers. In his first physical encounter he handles himself with such amazing skill and speed he amazes himself in his own ability. Matt Damon does a terrific job in playing Bourne all throughout the three movies. His quick thinking, his resolve and determination and his skills all make this a terrific group of movies. Wikipedia says that Matt Damon would do a fourth but only on the condition that director Paul Greengrass returns, which Greengrass has indicated he won't.

Die Hard

John McClane is a NY cop held up in an LA skyscraper as it is being robbed; with no way out McClane makes use of his acumen to foil the plans of the robbers. In the subsequent movies he is alone against large groups in tight or closed situations save for 'Live Free or Die Hard' where he is up against a mobile terrorist group. Bruce Willis plays McClane and gives him a grit and strength that really rounds out the character. He is under such threat and such tremendous odds it really becomes quite the action thriller to see how he makes it through to the end.

Terminator

For the longest time I would use The Terminator as the action movie to which all other action movies would compare. When this movie first came out it was so advanced and so raw it really set the stage for other action movies to come. When T2 came out, with the T1000 played by Robert Patrick, the special effects were astounding. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays The Terminator that in the first movie is out to kill Sarah Connor (played by Linda Hamilton) to prevent her son from being born to go on and lead a revolution against the machines. In T2 Schwarzenegger plays the same Terminator role but it was reprogrammed to protect John Connor (Edward Furlong). Robert Patrick's role as the T1000 was fantastic - he knew exactly how to move to make the T1000 look just slightly off. His morphing special effects also made this a captivating movie.

Casino Royale

Daniel Craig takes up the role of James Bond in this 21st Bond film. There is a particular scene in this movie that has me adding this movie to this hub. It has been a while since I've seen it, however, the opening scene has him chasing a free runner and that whole scene from beginning to end is very impressive in how the two characters get from place to place. In one specific part of it the Bond character runs through a wall, but it isn't that to which I am referring, but rather, immediately before that there is a scene where you just see him running, and the way it is filmed, the way he runs, makes him the fastest runner I think I've ever seen in a movie. Take a look at this scene if you see the movie some time, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Lethal Weapon

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover play police partners in a series of movies that are filled with action and humourous dialog between the two. The characters they play each have their own personality quirks that make them human and believable. Typically the two of them uncover large plots that put themselves and their families and homes in jeopardy. How they handle themselves and the situation they find themselves in make this a terrific series to watch.

Others

There are a bunch of others that I would consider, I'll list just a few of them here:

  • Predator with Arnold Schwarzenegger, great search and destroy movie
  • The Fugitive with Harrison Ford - great chase movie
  • The Matrix - innovative idea and filming
  • Aliens Trilogy - perhaps the scariest action movies

Conclusion

Are there any action movies that would be at the top of your list that I have't mentioned here? Let me know in the comments.
