Johnny Depp has taken up a wide range of roles that have become blockbusters.

Johnny Depp has become a prolific actor of this generation. Aside from his good looks, he is best known to top bill many unusual, intriguing, and diverse films throughout his career. Even though at times he falls short with some overly quirky roles that are a flop in cinemas, there are still a lot of movies that made him a famous actor.

Even at the start of his career, he took on small roles for classic favorites (like Nightmare on Elm Street) and with TV series (21 Jump Street), he managed to continue working and become a household name. His charm is also more popularly known with his collaborations with the director Tim Burton.

An interesting feature for this top five list is that most of these are for the young viewers (Nickelodeon, Disney produced). The top one even consists of four installations for anyone to enjoy!

5. Sleepy Hollow

Adapted from the classic Washington Irving short story (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow), this 1999 film by Tim Burton managed to take liberties in changing some parts of the plot as well as the characters. From the regular schoolmaster in the short story, Ichabod Crane is made to take the role of a police constable from New York City in this movie adaptation. Johnny Depp plays the part of Crane who uses unique techniques and unusual gadgets in solving crimes. He is sent to Sleepy Hollow to help solve the case of bizarre serial murders where all the victims are found dead in the woods with their heads cut off. The main character is faced with a legend that will test his scientific methods as most people in the town believe that a Hessian ghost rides through the woods and cutting off heads of the unbelievers.

Sleepy Hollow has an impressive cast including Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, Casper Van Dien and Jeffrey Jones. The film earned more than $200,000,000 worldwide.

4. Rango

In this Nickelodeon film, Johnny Depp gave voice to Rango, a pet chameleon who has always lived a comfortable life inside his glass terrarium. Depp worked with Director Gore Verbinski, best known for Pirates of the Caribbean, to make this Western adventure a refreshing treat for movie goers.

As the story progresses, Rango comes to discover life in the wild. He uses his imagination to bring different adventures within his terrarium. But with a bump in the road, his adventure goes beyond the wildest imaginary scenario he has ever thought of. Rango goes up, flying out of a car window, and is left in the middle of an unknown place. He has to experience the wild west in reality, way out of his comfortable imaginary settings.

This 2011 film is both commercial and critical success. It received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature of the year, as well as earning more than $240,000,000 worldwide.

3. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Another film with Director Tim Burton, Johnny Depp becomes one of the most popular Roald Dahl character: Willy Wonka. Unlike the first movie adaptation (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), this film is mainly created in line with the story written by Dahl.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory brings a delight to both young and old. Burton's style is seen with the lavish screen display of each scene. His usual dark scenes are brought to light with Willy Wonka's antics as well as those of the other casts.

The story tells the journey of Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), whose poor family lives near the chocolate factory, but can only afford to buy a single bar each year for the young boy's birthday. This is the young Charlie's life until a surprising announcement from Willy Wonka makes huge waves to every corner of the world. The most famous chocolate and candy company owner decides to invite five lucky children for a once in a lifetime chance to see the inside of the factory. Interested individuals are to find five golden tickets randomly placed in chocolate bars.

This colorful and delightful world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005 earned more than $470,000,000 worldwide. Its success is also attributed to its stunning cast which includes David Kelly, Helena Bonham Carter, Noah Taylor, Missi Pyle, James Fox, Deep Roy, Christopher Lee.

2. Alice in Wonderland

A surprising blockbuster directed by Tim Burton. Alice in Wonderland earned more than $1,000,000,000 worldwide. In this classic Lewis Carroll story, Burton worked together with screenwriter Linda Woolverton who is famous for Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. The two gave life to dazzling visuals of this magical world.

It tells the story of a 19-year-old Alice (played by Mia Wasikowska) who is attending an extravagant party where she is caught to a proposal by Hamish Ascot. Alice walks away and finds herself following a white rabbit with a pocket watch into the bushes where she tumbles down a hole. This leads her to a strange world with unfamiliar creatures who are afraid of the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter). Alice is now believed to be the one to free the kingdom by winning against the Jabberwocky, a dragon-like creature controlled by the Red Queen.

This film casts Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter where he tried to show different emotions aside from the character simply being mad. This blockbuster film also includes Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts, Matt Lucas as both Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and many more.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean

It's another big hit for Disney because this blockbuster film has earned more than $3,700,000,000 worldwide for all four installations. Pirates of the Caribbean has made one of Johnny Depp's most popular character, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Even though the film stars both Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, it was Captain Jack Sparrow who was seen for all the five installations. From the first movie in 2003, the tales of the unconventional pirate life got the public hooked. The Pirates series had a lot of famous names for its cast after more than a decade. Some actors and actresses seen in this franchise include Geoffrey Rush, Kevin McNally, Penelope Cruz, Chow Yun-fat, Jonathan Pryce, and others.

However, with the most recent issues regarding Johnny Depp's personal life, he won't be included in the coming Pirates movie. It may be a sad moment for his fans, but perhaps a new opportunity for the actor to find another great movie to work on next.
