Bowie Is My Hero

I am a recent convert to the musical church of David Bowie.  His music has always been in the background of my life, but ever since I first saw him in Labyrinth as a child, I’ve been quite frightened of his overwhelming sexuality.  This prevented me from truly appreciating him until recently.  Since our reintroduction, I have noticed how many of his songs have been remade.  Some have been done well, others, not so much.  A lot of people may be familiar with The Wallflowers’ rendition from the 1998 Godzilla soundtrack. During my time spent on YouTube, I noted that his hit “Heroes” is a favorite cover song of many bands.

Here are five different versions, including Bowie’s.  Do any of them live up to the original?

Kiara--The Wallflowers aren't for everybody. Thanks for sharing your opinion!

I think the singer in the Wallflowers makes everything a bit to dramatical. The way he ends every sentence by sliding on the note gets a bit too repetitive and annoying.

      What a great Hub, Megavitamin.

A great song from one of the very best.

Were you aware that he released the song in French and German too? - the German one 'Helden' sounds particularly good! And who could forget his performance of the song at 'Live Aid'!?

Now, you're going to hate me as I have something to tell you about David Bowie and his live performances. I have seen him 3 times - in Edinburgh, London and Paris. The first time was here in Edinburgh and it was the 'Ziggy Stardust' tour in the very early 70s where he eventually 'killed' Ziggy off at the Hammersmith Odeon. That evening we were so excited - very young, of course and all dressed in white - and we sang with him to all of his songs he had composed at that time - numbers from 'Ziggy Stardust', of course, but also from 'Hunky Dory' and 'The Man who Sold the World' - we were in heaven!! One of the very best concerts I have ever attended and this was in the days of concerts in theatres not huge stadia.

Thank you for bringing back memories!

I saw him (finally) on farewell tour.He said he would never do this material again.

This performance was comparable to MTV's unplugged...

Stage was bare except for him. Nothing added. This meant he had to carry the whole show. He did, and did it well!

I'll keep taking my steroids....I mean vitamins!

..yes I am back to one of my favorite songs and hubs saluting it .......... love your comment to that Frankenstein guy about William Shatner 'shatting' on more than one song - lol lol lol - I never laughed so hard in my life - see the comment - and yes I even 'shat' myself ...on that one!

And keep taking those vitamins because you are really one mega-talent!!

Saw Bowie on the Serious Moonlight tour, backing Iggy Pop on a tour and playing piano, and on the Thin White Duke tour where he opened up with Bunuel's Un Chien Andalou!

Hey Michael, I actually discovered how many people had remade this song while tooling around youtube. There were so many, I just had to write about them. Thanks for the comment!

I dig the wallflowers version, but I gotta say, in spite of his overwhelming sexuality, as you put it, he still does the best version. Nothing makes me feel more like a hero than that song. I wish we could swim, like the dolphins, like the dolphins can swim.

      Fun article!
