6 Must-See Obscure Movies You Haven't Heard Of

Updated on September 29, 2015

About This Article

I've seen a lot of movies, and this is a list of movies I'd never heard of until someone randomly told me about them. I also can't find many people who have seen these films. They are all worth a watch, but are in order of must-see to should-see format. Even if you don't typically watch the genre they're in, I'd recommend them all. Unless you get scared really easily, then don't watch The Descent!

I included trailers, ratings, my own summary, movie posters, release dates, links to purchase the movies, and IMDB ratings for your convenience. I did not include any spoilers, but I can't say the same for the trailers. I personally don't usually watch trailers anyway as they tend to give away more than I like to know before watching a movie.

One last note, I find IMDB ratings to be pretty accurate. If a movie is about a 6.7 or higher, it's going to be pretty enjoyable. A 6 - 6.6 rating is usually an okay movie, worth watching if you're bored. Below a 6 is not ever worth seeing, and above an 8 is an excellent show.

The Descent (2005)

#1 - The Descent (R, Horror)

IMDB Rating: 7.2

This is perhaps the scariest movie you'll ever see. If you like horror movies, you need to watch this asap. This is a very unique horror movie which takes place in an underground cave, and it does not deal with typical ghosts or murderers. A group of girl friends are just out to have a good adventure together...

You will surely pee your pants in this one. There is a sequel to this as well, I'd recommend it. It was very similar to the first movie.

Waiting... (2005)

#2 - Waiting... (R, Comedy)

IMDB Rating: 6.8

Waiting is kind of a raunchy comedy, but very funny. It follows the wild shenanigans of a typical restaurant diner's employees. There's no nudity or violence in it, just a lot of vulgar dialogue. It has a fairly star studded cast, which makes it surprising it was not more well known.

Ryan Reynolds is very funny like always, and also briefly topless for you ladies. This comedy is definitely worth a watch.

11:14 (2003)

#3 - 11:14 (R, Drama)

IMDB Rating: 7.2

The events leading up to an 11:14pm car crash, from five very different perspectives. Need I say more? It is very similar to the more well-known movie Crash from 2004. I liked 11:14 better though.

It's always helpful to watch movies like this to remember that your actions affect others, and that everyone has a story. After watching this, you may actually believe that going back in time and stepping on a butterfly will actually dramatically change the future! Well-made and entertaining movie for sure!

Alive (1993)

#4 - Alive (R, Drama/Biography)

IMDB Rating: 7.0

This is a true story about possibly the most intense survival story ever. On Friday the 13th of all days, 1972, a plane crashed high in the middle of the Andes mountains carrying the Uruguayan rugby team. The events they endured through, and ultimately survived, are truly remarkable.

I have read the book, also entitled Alive, and the movie stays very accurate to how the story really happened. This is a must see for anyone. You will be watching this movie for the insane story, not so much for an amazing cinematic experience.

Equilibrium (2002)

#5 - Equilibrium (R, Action)

IMDB Rating: 7.5

When I first saw this movie I was blown away. The only reason I'm not currently blown away, is because I've seen it 6 times now. It takes place in a future wannabe-utopian society. The fighting scenes are awesome, although I wish there was more of them. The rest of the movie induces some thought-provoking questions.

I also want to add that this movie should've been rated PG. The violence isn't bloody, there's zero sex, and there's only one curse word I can remember.

A Simple Plan (1998)

#6 - A Simple Plan (R, Suspense/Drama)

IMDB Rating: 7.5

I promise this movie is better than the cover makes it look. This is a very interesting movie that will make you think. What would you do if you came upon something valuable that no one else knew about? Whatever you decide, your plan may sound simple, but nothing is ever that simple.

I've seen it twice and have enjoyed it both times (they were a couple years apart, however).
