A Mother's Playlist for Her Son
My son turns 15 on Dec 1st and I have challenged myself to write 15 hubs that celebrate these awesome years of motherhood. These hubs would feature all the things, hopes, wishes and so many more that I want to share with my son. It would show the experiences from which I have learned, still learning, and those that I would like to learn as a mother. And I want to share this with all the parents and single-moms out there.
My son and I may be different in so many ways, we are two very independent persons with preferences of our own, but love for music is one thing we have in common. We may have different tastes in music, but every now and then we come up with some that we both like. Music has so many different meanings and uses for each one of us. Music entertains us. It cheers us and keeps the sadness away. It heals us. It teaches us. It empowers us. It moves us. It helps us. It connects us. It unites us. It makes us dance, it makes us sing with them. It reminds us of our first love, first heartache, and most of our experiences have their own theme song. Music makes us mushy, exhilarated, and nostalgic.
But, all of them takes on a new and deeper meaning once we become a mom. Some songs become more meaningful the minute we see our child and experience parenthood. I have to admit that even some love songs seen in a different light when I sang it for my son. And I have to believe it's all true for other moms, and dads, too.
Here are some songs that tops my list of what I can call a mother's playlist, in no particular order. You may have a son or daughter, but I think that the songs in Mama's playlist will take you back to the first time you saw your child, the first smile, laughter, steps, the first time your child went to school, the first arguments, the many-firsts in your lives and the experiences that binds you together. It will bring back every parents wish, dreams, worries and fears for their children. I have always said it has not always been smooth sailing, especially since I am both mom and dad for my son. But every second of these 15 years have been worth it...and I look forward to the next years with him, and hopefully, his wife and my grandchildren.
A Mother's Prayer by Celine Dion
This song by Celine Dion is I think every parent's prayer for their children. We pray for a lot of personal things but the most important prayer we have is for our children, thay they will always be safe and under the guidance of the good Lord.
I pray you'll be my eyes
And watch her where she goes
And help her to be wise
Help me to let go
Every mother's prayer, Every child knows
Lead her to a place, Guide her with your grace
To a place where she'll be safe
I pray she finds your light, And holds it in her heart
As darkness falls each night, Remind her where you are
You'll Always Be My Baby by Sara Evans
Sara Evans song is one of those songs I can relate with. My father gave me the opportunity to be me, to fly whenever, wherever, however I wanted to. And I would like to give that opportunity to my son, I hope I will be as strong as my Dad and let him go be himself. But as I have often told him, ....no matter how far he has gone, no matter how old he is, he will always be my baby.
There he is, my little man, I’m sure he'll get in trouble every now and then
And I pray to God that when he does I’ll be just as understanding, as my father was
'Cause the last thing that I wanna do is let him down
So instead of being angry I’m gonna throw my arms around him and I’ll say
In the sunlight or the rain, Brightest nights or darkest days
I'll always feel the same way, Whatever road you may be on
Know your never to far gone, My love is there, wherever you may be
Just remember that you'll always be my baby
My Wish by Rascal Flatts
My Wish by Rascal Flatts can be interpreted by some as a simple wish by a man for a woman but like I said it takes a new meaning for parents. As a mother, I would like my son to know that I wish him all the best in life, that I pray he finds what he wants in this life, that he choose what he really wants, to be himself because no matter what, I will always be there for him. And if I am doing right, then he knows that.
I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow,
And each road leads you where you wanna go,
And if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
And if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin' till you find the window,
If it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile.
But more than anything, more than anything
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.
This is my wish, I hope you know somebody loves you, May all your dreams stay big
I Hope You Dance by Lee Womack
One of the best country songs I have ever heard, this song by Lee Womack has a very encouraging sentiment that all mother's can relate with. We would like our children to learn to take chances, to dream on, and not to be afraid of trying new things. We want them to be able to go for all that they wish for and not limit themselves to what's easy, to forge ways to better themselves to whatever they may want to be.
I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin' might mean takin' chances but they're worth takin',
Lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth makin',
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to sellin' out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance
Never Alone by Jim Brickman
Not everything will go well, parents can't promise it will be smooth sailing for their children. What we want them to know is that they need not be alone, we will always be there for them. Maybe not together physically but our love and all the values and things we have shared and taught them will serve as their guide, its just like being with them and thus, they will never be alone.
May the angels protect you
Trouble neglect you
And heaven accept you when its time to go home
May you always have plenty
The glass never empty
Know in your belly
You're never alone
May your tears come from laughing
You find friends worth having
As every year passes
They mean more than gold
May you win and stay humble
Smile more than grumble
And know when you stumble
You're never alone
[Chorus:]
Never alone, Never alone, I'll be in every beat of your heart, When you face the unknown, Wherever you fly, This isn't goodbye, My love will follow you stay with you, Baby you're never alone
I have to be honest, As much as I wanted, I’m not gonna promise that cold winds won't blow, So when hard times have found you, And your fears surround you, Wrap my love around you You're never alone
Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) by Billy Joel
A beautiful lullabye from the great singer songwriter - Billy Joel. It deals with the same thought of unconditional love and no matter how far our children may go, no matter the great distance, parents will always be there for their children.
Goodnight, my angel
Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away
Goodnight, my angel, Now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say, Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay, And like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep, The water's dark
And deep inside this ancient heart, You'll always be a part of me
You're Gonna Be (Always Loved By Me) by Reba Mcentire
Sometimes its hard to know when it's time to let go, my dad told me that I shouldn't coddle, especially since he is a boy. I found it hard until I realize that it was not the way I was brought up. Yes, he may be an only son but growing up meant taking things his way, learning from his mistakes, reaching his dreams, to fly whenever, wherever, however he wants to. Being here for him and knowing he is loved will make him confident enough to make it on his own.
Sometimes I'll protect you from everything that's wrong
Other times I'll let you just find out on your own
But that's when you'll be growin',
And the whole time I'll be knowin
You're gonna fly with every dream you chase
You're gonna cry, but know that that's okay
Sometimes life's not fair, but if you hang in there
You're gonna see that sometimes bad is good
We just have to believe things work out like they should
Life has no guarantees, but always loved by me
You're gonna be
Mama's Song by Carrie Underwood
I hope the girl that my son loves and marry will sing this song to her mom. All parents want the best for their children. We all hope and pray that someday they will find the one person who will make them a better person, who will be with them all their lives, through the best and the worst. The lines below clearly show that as a mom you have done a good job, when the woman your son plans to marry can assure her own mother not to worry because she has found a real man. And for those who have sons, I believe this is the best compliment that we can ever receive.
And I know you watched me grow up,
and only want what's best for me.
And I think I found the answer to your prayers.
And he Is good, so good.
He treats your little girl,
like a real man should.
He is good, SO good.
He makes promises he keeps.
No, he's never gonna leave.
So, don't you worry about me.
Don't you worry about me.
When I Say I Do by Matthew West
It is my dream to see my son sing this on his wedding day and mean it.
And I have never been so sure of anything before,
Like I am in this moment here with you
Now for better or for worse are so much more than only words
And I pray everyday will be the proof
That I mean what I say when I say 'I do'
Yeah I mean what I Say when I say 'I do'
Here are some more songs that shows what parents really feel about their children. Basically, what we want them to know is that they are loved, no matter what. BUT, that does not mean we will condone them doing wrong. And when one is young that is the thing that is hard to understand. Not everything will go well or the way you want it to and we cannot always straighten and make it easy for our children, but if we are doing our best for our children then they would know what to do no matter how rough the road is.
