A message for all ages: we are the world-Michael Jackson
Just like Albert Einstein said, “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music…” I agree with him not only because I love and enjoy listening to music but also I love singing because music has a sort of magic that can connect one to the spiritual realms. Music heals or lifts the soul and it is best when it has a message in it for all to learn.
Some musicians have great message in their songs. It can be a love song or a song of unity and peace. Some songs are inspirational, spiritual, or motivational. Most of these songs live long because of the message in it. Michael Jackson was known as the greatest pop stars and even though he is gone, his message lives on.
His songs like, “heal the world, make it a better place for you and for me and the entire human race. There are people dying, if you care enough for the living…” He started the song inspirationally by singing “There is a place in your heart and I know that it is love.” Michael Jackson sang other interesting songs like “it doesn’t matter if you are black or white.” This song reminds me of the character, Jackson Michaels, in my book, “Most perfect exchange: the cost of liberty” (http://bookstore.booktango.com/products/SKU-000550902/Most-perfect-exchange.aspx
) and the relationship in the names is easy to understand because he was involved just as we are all involved.
I was recently in the midst some youths that love the song, “We are the world” so much that they sang it daily and I sang it along with them. Their interest in the song developed more as the understood the lyrics of the song. Some of them felt like crying as they listened to the Haiti remix of the song. The song started like this “there comes a time when we heed a certain call when the world must together as one. There are people dying. And it’s time to lend hand to life…”
The above lyrics made me to understand that the unity and brotherhood of man is not really impossible. This is because the human race will definitely unite not minding creed, faith or religion to fight against any alien invader of the earth. That may be because at that point we shall see reasons why we should be united and why we should fight together for our survival as humans. Man may no longer consider his personal interest because his survival should come first. Consequently, religious creed and dogma or the color of our skin or culture or languages and the boundaries of nations will no longer be a barrier. It follows that man is the actual cause of his problems by placing his differences with his fellow man above virtues like love, peace, unity, equity, justice, golden rule, and tolerance which he should share with his fellow man. It is because man fail to consider these virtues especially the golden rule that people still kill and discriminate for religious reasons or for wealth among others.
There is a part of the lyrics that goes this way, “We can’t go on pretending day by day that someone somewhere will soon make a change.” This shows that it really begins with us by us being the change we want to see. But this may not work in that some people want to convert others by all means and that is the change they want to see so they can kill or make hate speeches to achieve it. this is usually because such people ignore the chorus of the song which says, “we are the world” which means the world belongs to us all and others have the same right and freedom we have which gave us the liberty to make our choice in life. Likewise others have same right to make their own choices for as long as such choices do not stop us from exercising or carrying out our own chosen belief. It is only on this simple principle which some people called the “golden rule” that we can co-exist in peace.
It really hurts and it is a shame that most religious leaders will have to wait until their members have attacked and killed those of different religious belief before they would call for peace by saying “we all worship one God.” This is the case between Muslims and Christians, especially in Africa, as is the case in Nigeria and Middle East among other places. The late call of “we all worship one God” is what should have been thought in the various religious settings and not wait until there is conflict.
Whatever may be the case, Michael Jackson is among those few that have used music to send a message that has what it takes to live forever because like the song said, only us can make the world a better place and the future generations should know it. I also say that it is better we live in such a manner so that after we are gone, the next generation will see reason to believe that men once lived on earth. And that will be if they meet a healthy society and environment.
