Abandoned
2010, ***, R
Starring: Brittany Murphy, Dean Cain, Mimi Rogers, Peter Bogdanovich
The late Brittany Murphy stars in this thriller about a couple that recently started dating -- but there's more to it than that. One morning she takes her boyfriend Kevin Peterson (Dean Cain, TVs “Lois and Clark,” TV movie “Operation Cupcake”) into the hospital for orthopedic surgery on his leg, and he never returns from the surgery. In fact, the hospital has no record of him being there; they don't have a record of his name in their system, nor do they have a record of the that was supposed to perform the surgery, or the nurse aka Amanda that admitted him when she took him to the hospital room for a pre-op, standard paperwork.
“Abandoned” is kind of like the Jodie Foster film “Flight Plan,” so if you liked that one you'll definitely like flick. The film does Joel your mind a bit, because I don't know anyone that likes to be in the hospital other than people that are doctors and nurses that actually want to help people get well. The movie however does have a twist, of course there has to be a twist to all of this mess -- but is it a good twist?
Mary Walsh (Brittany Murphy) has a past is filled with lots of pain, losing her mother had a major effect on her and she is been taking anxiety medication. Her girlfriend whom you see only when she's (Murphy, “Spun,” “The Ramen Girl”) talking to her on her cell phone while frantically telling her that her boyfriend is missing in the hospital -- well her friend basically tells her well you've only known the guy for months he could've opted last after the surgery. She's insisting that he would never have done that I drove in here, I'm supposed to be with this man and I think we're going to get married one day he's the one for me.
Well soon enough, we realize there's a lot more going on and Mary has no idea until something happens to her in the hospital that makes her realize she's been seriously duped by this guy Kevin – whom she thought was the man of her dreams, and possibly her future husband. Boy was she wrong! Ladies do your homework before you start dating someone! If I go into more detail I will give away the entire movie. This movie is worth a watch, unless you can't stand to look at the horrible dye job of Brittany Murphy's hair, and the fact that it looks like it needed a serious deep conditioning.
Also, Murphy doesn't look very healthy in this movie. It's upsetting because she passed away shortly after making this movie; I believe it was one of her last if not her last film.
The film is a decent thriller, though not her best work. May she rest in peace.
Films that of her better works include: “Clueless,” “Don’t Say A Word,” “8 Mile,” and one of my favorites a black comedy called “Zack and Reba.” She will never be forgotten as a 90s star and no one will ever forget her distinct raspy voice with a quirky attitude as cartoon character Luanne Platter on TVs “King of the Hill,” and girlfriend of Lucky (Tom Petty; rest in peace Tom you are my fav rocker of all time.)
