America's Funniest 911 Calls

Updated on November 17, 2015

911 is the emergency phone number for all of North America. Way back in the year 1968 the phone number 911 became the national emergency number for the United States. Calling 911 gives the person calling access to fire, police and ambulance services The phone number 911 is intended only for use in emergency circumstances. To misuse and abuse the phone number 911 for any other purpose other than emergency situations can be considered a crime. Most agencies don't normally keep separate totals on the number of prank calls, so it's hard to say just how many prank calls 911 operators receive each and every day, however there's often a surprise from law enforcement waiting for those who make these calls. There are both unintentional and intentional prank calls, and the intentional calls are the one's that land people in hot water. Here are some of the funnier prank 911 calls that create problems for the 911 operators trying to do their service, however some of these calls are still hilarious.

Often times drinking alcohol beverages and dialing the number 911 just doesn't mix. A 57 year old man on his birthday called 911 after he had a lot to drink to file a complaint with the 911 operator that nobody would help him celebrate his birthday. You'd think that this alone would get the birthday boy in hot water with the police, however when the police showed up at the man's door he was greeted with a small birthday cake from the officers. This is where you would think that this story ends with a happy ending, however a few hours after the law left he called 911 with the same complaint again. This time when the police officers arrived they found the man walking down the side of the road drinking a bottle of vodka, and you guessed it, they arrested him for being intoxicated in a public place. Just remember that drinking and dialing 911 isn't a joke and can lead to some serious repercussions.

Other 911 calls involve a lady calling 911 because a fast food restaurant wouldn't make a cheeseburger the way she wanted it. Children as young as four years old call 911 to ask for help with their homework for school. A woman called 911 and asked the operator if she could explain to her how to cook a turkey. A man called 911 because he ran out of gas and wanted them to bring him some so that he could get back on his way to a bar. A woman called 911 three times to tell 911 operators that her roommate was trying to take beer away from her. A police officer called 911 after eating one to many pot brownies which he confiscated and had taken from suspects earlier that day. A man called 911 because he misplaced his NCAA March Madness predictions, and he wanted to update his brackets. A teenager called 911 because she had a $20 bet at stake on the name of the actor who played Darren on the television show Bewitched, and she wanted the name verified so that she could collect her winnings.

If you're thinking of making a prank 911 phone, STOP! There are people who are in serious trouble out there and really need emergency services.

Have you ever had to call 911 for an actual emergency?

Can relate to much of this as I used to work at a directory call centre, and some of the calls were just ludicrous.

I heard one this morning on a radio show that you might want to add to your list:

"A guy called 911 to say that his wife could not get out of her jacket because the zipper was stuck. The police showed up, got her out of the jacket and wrote him a ticket for calling 911".

Honestly, why people don't use common sense is beyond me. like you pointed out so beautifully, don't these people realize that while police are going to answer their prank call, someone else might be in desperate need? It's like these people that stay during hurricanes and then have to be rescued from off their roof. They risk the responders' lives and their own and all they had to do was leave when it was necessary to do so. Material things are not worth risking lives.

      Interesting and voted up!

I've seen some pretty interesting 911 calls, but I haven't heard of these. I thought it was cool that the officers brought that guy a birthday cake, but it wasn't cool that he got drunk afterwords.

      Good article.

Suppose that you did not even realize that pushed the button like you were sleepwalking and are surprised to see them there.

Never knew that people would be so silly to phone 911 for reasons that have nothing to do with serious emergencies. They should be charged like in SA when you hit the panic button of an alarm system to often for non medical reasons in your home. ( if you have an alarm system) Usually done by mistake. Then you get billed a steep fee for coming out for nothing.

      Informative hub

Wow, it's incredible how many people call 911 for stupid things that they should know does not warrant it. I laughed pretty hard when I read the one about the cop calling 911 after eating pot brownies. I just don't get it. I bet this one was unintentional. I don't hit all buttons often but I had to with this fun hub. Have a good evening.

Clever topic, ths. I would not be surprised if some folks call 911 just to hear a human voice at the other end of the line. Sad!

It is not hard to believe that some people do this unintentionally, but it is hard to believe that there are persons who do it with intentions!

I know that it is only a TV show but I watch 'Emergency!' and when they receive calls they get the address and there are times that one of them says, "Do you recognize the address?" It is because the person who called has done this several times before faking heart attacks, etc. I am sure that really happens.

I voted this Hub thumbs up and shared it and Pinned it. This is important to read.
