"Another Earth" Movie Review

Updated on January 5, 2015

Another Earth is an independent romantic drama that centers around Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling), a student who has just gotten accepted into the MIT astrophysicist’s program, and a brilliant composer at the height of his career, John Burroughs (William Mapother). However, on the night a parallel world is discovered in their solar system, Rhonda destroys all their dreams in an instant. Through this tragedy begins the story of redemption, love, and what if?

Writer Mike Cahill with Astrophysicist Dr. Richard Berendzen

Rhoda tries to make amends when she is released, but doesn’t have the courage to confront the man whose life she ruined by accident. She sees how wrecked his life has become and decides to clean up for him as a way of relieving her guilt. In the process of putting his life back in order so he can move on, Rhoda and John begin to fall in love.

In the meantime, the rest of the world is trying to communicate with the other Earth that has appeared in the sky. They discover it is a duplicate Earth with all of the same people as on Earth. A millionaire decides to hold a contest to see who will be the first to travel to this “Other Earth” and collect more data. Who but an aspiring, astrophysicist student who is now expendable should go? But it is never that simple, is it?

This is a romantic drama with a science fiction background story. If you are looking for science action, this probably won’t be the movie for you. However, if you are into independent films that are odd, a little slow, and very contemplative, this movie might be just what you are looking for with that twist at the end.
