Songs that Ask "Are You...?"
Once you start hubbing, it's amazing how/where inspiration for new hubs will strike. Recently I was in the car and the song, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" came on the radio. This song features a catchy guitar riff that inevitably makes my head bob to and fro. As the beat thrumped repeatedly, the words, "Are you? Are you? Are you?" drummed their own beat into my little hubber brain.
Are you gonna be my girl? Are you gonna write a hub? Be my girl? Write a hub? Be? Write? Eureka! My next hub would be devoted to songs that ask a question beginning with the words "Are you....?"
I hope you enjoy my selection. Feel free to add others I may have forgotten or been unaware of!
Are you.... EXPERIENCED?
Are you... GONNA GO MY WAY?
No doubt Lenny Kravitz is channeling Hendrix here to some degree, but he's so upbeat and tight there's no denying Kravitz is his own man.
And yes, Lenny. I'm goin' any way you're goin'. Any time. Any how.
Are you... THE ONE?
Are you... IN?
Aussie duo The Presets asks in a modern industro-synth, gravelly voice: "Are you the one?" Uh. Probably not. Maybe when I was a little headbanger myself in the '80s. Note this live version is not the best one. But all the ones I preferred kept coming up with the message "embedding disabled by request."
Same with this song by Incubus. The song itself is pretty. but the video (a must see) harkens back more to the swingin' '70s (dig that pilot!). What are they talking about? Are you in with the in crowd? Did you make it past the doorman? Or maybe, on the most literal level for all those swingers in the crowd ..."Are you in" means....??? Sorry, kids. This is a PG-13 rated hub so I'll leave that up to your imagination:-).
Are you... DEAD YET?
Not being familiar with this band I looked them up and found this description: Children of Bodom is a Finnish melodic death metal and power metal band from Espoo, Finland, formed in 1993.
Monty Python has the perfect retort in their "Bring Out Your Dead" skit ("I ain't dead yet!")
As to Children of Bodom, I might argue the term "melodic death metal" is an oxymoron, but maybe it's just not my cup of poison.
Are you... LONESOME TONIGHT?
Thank God for YouTube! Without it I would remained blissfully ignorant of crooning sensation Adrian Daminescu! I would have gone straight for the default Elvis Pressley version of this smarmy song.
Lucky for me (and for you, my dear hub-reading audience), YouTube proffered this infinitely superior (would that be su-smearier?) version. As if the melody and words aren't enough, Adrian takes the song and wraps it right around your heartstrings. Gotta love the blue jacket, the bottle of J&B with two wine glasses, the classy blonde in black evening gown. These extra artistic touches bring the song's true emotional power to the forefront.
All this listener can say is, "Wow! I don't think I'll ever be lonely again!!!"
Are you... GONNA BE MY GIRL?
And last, but by no means least, the Jet (another Aussie band) song that inspired this hub. This live version even features a cool bass solo at the beginning and an enthusiastic audience sing-along. I dunno. The lyrics look deceptively simple but are sooo mangled/mumbled by the audience.
Are You Gonna Be My Girl?
Go!!
So 1, 2, 3, take my hand and come with me
because you look so fine
and i really wanna make you mine.
I say you look so fine
that I really wanna make you mine.
Oh, 4,5,6 c'mon and get your kicks
now you dont need that money
when you look like that, do ya honey.
Big black boots,
long brown hair,
she's so sweet
with her get back stare.
Well I could see,
you home with me,
but you were with another man, yea!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yea!
I said, are you gonna be my girl?
Well, so 1,2,3, take my hand and come with me
because you look so fine
and i really wanna make you mine.
I say you look so fine
that I really wanna make you mine.
Oh, 4,5,6 c'mon and get your kicks
now you dont need that money
with a face like that, do ya.
Big black boots,
long brown hair,
she's so sweet
with her get back stare.
Well I could see,
you home with me,
but you were with another man, yea!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yea!
I said, are you gonna be my girl?
Oh yea. Oh yea. C'mon!
I could see,
you home with me,
but you were with another man, yea!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yea!
Uh, be my girl.
Be my girl.
Are you gonna be my girl?! Yea
