Bollywood ~ Om Shanti Om (Movie / Film)

Updated on May 30, 2015

"Om Shanti Om"

Plenty of Bollywood songs, Bollywood music and Bollywood dance in this lively Bollywood movie ~ but it's not all sweetness and light; there is a darker side to it. Shah Rukh Khan stars.

Bollywood ~ 'Om Shanti Om'

When, during my teens and twenties, I was working in Birmingham city centre, I often noticed the exotic Bollywood films showing at some of the cinemas I passed ~ and I was intrigued!

Recently, Bollywood films have become more accessible to non-Indian viewers. ‘Bride and Prejudice’ was a fun film, which was enjoyed by ‘the west’. My daughter and I certainly enjoyed it.

When Shilpa Shetty went into the Celebrity Big Brother House, we were educated a little more in the ways of Indian film-making. (Shilpa has a small part in this film.)

And this evening, on TV, I watched the film ‘Om Shanti Om’ ~ so this is one of the very few 'Bollywood' movies that I have seen.

Colourful, Musical and Theatrical

‘Om Shanti Om’ is a colourful, musical and theatrical three-hour event, which includes comedy and dance, love and murder, re-incarnation and revenge. It is both light-hearted and dramatic; happy and sad; comic and tragic ~ but always hopeful ~ and it ends on a high note.

There are at least two sides to every story and this one definitely has at least two aspects.

The music will certainly have you tapping your feet and the style will be an education in Indian film escapism. The hero is good-looking, amusing and engaging, while the heroine is a real beauty. (The anti-hero is also very good-looking!)

Three hours is a long time to concentrate on a film, but this one should hold your attention ~ and it could be followed in two sittings; pre- and post-reincarnation.

If you decide to watch it, I feel that you will have a treat in store for you.

If you wish, you can purchase the music downloads and / or the DVD from Amazon. Both are available from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com

‘Om Shanti Om’ (2007) was directed by Farah Khan and stars: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Shreyas Talpade, Arjun Rampal, Kirron Kher and others.

'Bollywood' !?!?

'Bollywood' is the term used for the Indian film industry, which is based in the city of Mumbai.

The former name for 'Mumbai' was 'Bombay' ~ mix that up with a bit of 'Hollywood', the feted home of great American films ~ et voila!!!

There are a number of books available on this subject, for anyone who would like to become better acquainted with it ~ plus several 'Bollywood' DVDs.

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan (alternatively Shahrukh Khan), born in 1965, is the attractive male star of 'Om Shanti Om'. He is an Indian presenter, as well as being a 'Bollywood' actor. He has starred in a number of light-hearted musical films and also some TV series.

Khan hosted the Indian versions of 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' and 'Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? / Are You Smarter Than a 10-Year-Old?'

Khan's recent film, My Name Is Khan, was a move in a different direction ~ into serious 'religio-political' issues ~ issues of very recent history.

Shah Rukh Khan is married to the Indian film producer, Gauri Khan. He can be seen with his wife and family here:

      Hello srk4you :)

      Thanks for commenting :)

I've only seen 'Om Shanti Om' once and I enjoyed it ~ though it is rather long.

'My Name is Khan' is about a much more serious subject, of course, so it is interesting on different levels.

I like "My Name is Khan" more than OSO. I was in high school when the movie released. I really liked it then. But whenever they air "Om Shanti Om" again on TV, it bores me. However, I really like the songs.

Seems I have met a fellow Bollywood lover, nice to meet you!

I own this movie and I really loved it. Since it flashes back to the 70's, it really makes fun of the styles of the time, as well as making fun of the movie industry in general. I love the scene where the girl asks if she does the romantic scene in the same setting better than the other people who have done the same exact thing. Also the part where they talk about how hard it is to get into the industry unless you are related to one of the stars. It also brings back many of the stars from many other films. It is a great film.

I liked My Name is Khan too, very different from a typical Bollywood movie. I wrote a review about it.
