Captain America: Hit or Miss?
Chris Evans is hot. Seriously, he is the entire package--gorgeous face, nice body, and a charismatic screen presence, but can he actually carry a film?
I've seen almost all of his movies, save for two of them, and in none of them was he the main character unless you count the film "Cellular", which I don't since I would say that Kim Basinger was the lead in that one. That's saying a lot for someone who's been in the business for over a decade. I don't know if he just never wanted the duty of leading man or if he was just never chosen for any of those parts. Whatever it was, he's got the job as leading man now, but is the film going to actually be a break out for the actor or another flop on his resume?
His movie "Street Kings" grossed way less than expected and after I saw it, I understood why. It just wasn't that good of a movie. It was almost predictable. In "Fierce People" I think it was one of his finest performances, but it's one of those movies that got lost in the cracks and the ending wasn't as good as it could have been (the script fell apart in different areas of the movie as well). His movie "London" was annoying at best. If you want to watch a spiel where he's questioning the existence of God and doing blow in a bathroom with Jason Statham for an hour and a half then that's your movie. "The Perfect Score" is a lighthearted preteen film that shouldn't be taken seriously, and if you've been a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles since they came out in the early nineties you'll want to skip the horrible "TMNT" cartoon movie they did a few years ago. His movie "Loss of a Teardrop Diamond" was just horrible and I'm saying that and I only was able to get through about the first ten minutes of it. Yes, it was just that bad of a movie. Not only were their supposedly southern accents some of the worst I've ever heard in my life (and that's really saying something), but his costar in the movie, Bryce Dallas Howard did some of the worst acting I've ever seen in my life at the beginning of that movie. I honestly see why I'd never heard of her before that movie.
"Sunshine" is one of those movies where his performance is almost a tearjerker and the film itself wasn't bad either (except for maybe a little oddness throughout that was meant to be scary). If I had to choose my favorites of his they would have to be his two "Fantastic 4" films in which he played Johnny Storm. I love his character in those movies because he's so fun and funny, you instantly fall in love with him. I actually only watched the first "Fantastic 4" film because of Julian McMahon (that man is absolute eye candy) and I was wondering who in the world Chris Evans even was. When I found out he was in "Not Another Teen Movie" I was shocked because I didn't even recognize him (the black hair he wore in the movie made him look completely different) and to tell you the truth, even though I found the movie funny I didn't really remember any of the actors in it. "NATM" is an okay satire film that you watch when you want to turn your brain off completely and just be entertained for a good 2 hours. It's nothing serious, but it's one of my favorite movies that he's in. Another one of his more recent movies that I enjoyed was "The Losers". Again, he's at his best playing these fun and funny guys, he makes you laugh and drool over his good looks.
However, in Captain America he looks to be playing a pretty serious character. Although he's meant to be a super hero (or something of the sort) once again, this time his script along with his performance are the things that people will definitely be reviewing. If you're a fan of his or if you were ever curious about him, no doubt you've read interviews and seen on certain websites that he's one of those extremely guarded actors that don't like to talk about anything personal which can turn fans off sometime. I understand that with the oversaturation of a lot of stars and the media some celebs want to steer clear of it, but I've always wondered if he was equally as standoffish with his fans as well. There are a few videos where he seems friendly, but that's a lot of celebrities that appear to be one thing when a camera is around and a completely different person when there's no media to see, but you don't actually get that impression from Evans. While he may like being anonymous it's not something that producers look for when they're casting if they want their movie to be a big earner at the box office. They want someone who's not only going to be a good actor and good looking on screen, but they also want to cast someone who people will actually be willing to spend about ten bucks to go see in the theaters and if no one is interested they're not going to invest. I was actually surprised to see that Evans was the leading man in the "Captain America" movie, but it was a pleasant one. While I'm not going to spend any money and time to actually go see this in the theaters, I'll wait till it comes out on DVD watch it. The previews make it seem interesting enough, but it's not something I was so anxious to see that I was going to take the time out to drive to the Beacon.
If anyone has actually seen this movie, share your thoughts below! I want to hear what you have to say about this film.
