Coco Before Chanel: Movie Review
The destiny molds the character
There is hardly a life-story more touching and inspiring at the same time than that of Coco Chanel. From the orphanage to the glory of a famous fashion-maker is the path of her life. Yet, an uneasy path, full of thorns. That's what made her character, ferm, persistent.
Who but a small French brunette named Audrey Tautou could better interprete the part of Coco Chanel in this movie? I bet it's a perfect match!
Learning the ropes
The movie features the youth of the famous fashion designer and her early years. Get yourself inchanted with the peculiar ambience of France of the beginning of the 20th century as well as with the charms of the bunch of great actors. The leading part belongs to Audrey Tautou, who recreates Coco Chanel's character in a very true way.
As she leaves the orphanage, Gabrielle Chanel comes to Paris to try herself in the career of a singer. Very soon she realizes that she cannot really break through the hoarse shell of the juries' judgements. So she decides to give her destiny a different turn and starts a love affaire with a rich textile heir Balsan. But Balsan's mansion is too much of a prison for her ambitions and creativity. Treated for another master's mistress, she is humiliated by the servants of Balsan. The walls of his house is another shell to break through. Meanwhile she starts a love affaire with 'Boy' Capel, who becomes her true love. Also, she gets busy with designing and making hats and even finds her first clients. The love triangle she gets involved in is broken by her rapture with Balsan. Finally, she can see the bigger world. The tragic moment of the movie is the death of Boy who accidentally dies in a car crash.
Yet, Coco makes her way to the world of Fashion and Design. She can now start her professional growth and become a fashion designer. Though, finally, it is all about style, not fashion...
