Movie Review - I, Robot (2004)
Man vs Machine
Let’s hear it for Science Fiction action movies. In this case the action flick I, Robot. This is an adaptation from a series of short stories written by Isaac Asimov which is a classic piece of literature. The three laws of robotics have become a staple in any science fiction story in some way.
When is it not a pleasure to watch Will Smith? I admit I was not a fan of him in his Fresh Prince of Bel Air days. Nor am I a fan of rap. But his movies on the other hand are always a pleasure. Okay, the shower scene had a little to do with it. Hot body there, baby.
Smith plays Det. Del Spooner who has a hatred for robots. I think it is more accurately survivor guilt which he displaces to all robots. He owns a number of ‘low tech’ devices in his home which many of us own now. The future is only slightly different from the present. We are already seeing the trends in technology. Are robots that difficult to imagine as the next step? In many ways I’d love a robot to clean my house, take care of the grocery shopping, and do the cooking. The only thing it would need is to be plugged in to recharge and avoid magnets near its harddrive.
We never see Alan Tudyk in this film, but he’s there none the less, wearing a tight green suit the entire time. Wardrobe and make up was not a large concern for him. But the matching job they did of his face to the robot Sonny was gorgeous work. The making of is a must watch part of the DVD where they show how they capture the nuances of Alan’s face and merge it into Sonny. Nice work. Love Alan Tudyk in anything.
I like science fiction, I like action, and I like this movie. Will Smith is become the sci-fi action hero of this decade. He carries it well. Everything was just different enough to indicate the future, yet familiar. The Olvaltine Bar was just plain funny. Diners don’t change.
While this is not the usual end of the world sci-fi film I enjoy, it was fascinating vision of the near future.
