A Childish Gambino Film
GUAVA ISLAND is directed by Hiro Murai, a long-time collaborator with Childish Gambino. Even though the movie is directed by Murai, it's still "A Childish Gambino Film".
The duo has worked together on two music videos, the wonderful, This Is America and Sober (from the album STN MTN / Kauai). They have also worked on the Donald Glover starring dramedy from FX, Atlanta.
The trailer for GUAVA ISLAND premiered at a festival in NZ. I will post a cam-copy below, it ain't much but you will get an idea of what's to come.
The film looks to be primarily set around music, in the trailer we see Donald Glover singing and playing the guitar. It also looks to be quite gritty, about growing up in a beautiful, yet dangerous place with little to none resources for a way out.
I really don't mind, I am a big fan of both Childish Gambino and Donald Glover. Guava Island is definitely one to watch out for.

While We're On The Subject Of Donald Glover...Have You Checked ATLANTA Yet?
Atlanta from FX
Really, if you haven't checked out Atlanta starring Donald Glover (who also writes and directs) then you are truly missing out. Firstly, I am not a fan of rap music, I can listen to some tunes but it's usually a big "nope" from me.
Even though the series is based on the local rap scene, it has so much more to offer. It deals with everyday working class issues in a working class area with hilarious and sometimes tragic consequences.
It follows two cousins; one a rapper who goes by the name Paper Boi who is on the brink of making it big. He is managed by his cousin, Earn (Glover) who is flat broke, living with his parents and trying hard to piece things back together with the mother of his child.
Earn must give it his all to make sure his cousin doesn't mess things up. If he can help Paper Boi make it to the top then he can provide for his family.
FX initially ordered a 10-part series with a second season getting greenlit. A third season was also announced this year and will premiere in 2019.
