Download 2017 First Line-up Announcement

First Line-up Announcement

Donington Park sets for a beautiful back drop

Donington Park will once again see its gardens filled with Rock lovers and metal heads alike. With bands such as Slipknot, the Prodigy, Iron Maiden and Linkin Park gracing its mainstage in past years, the first line-up announcement has created mix reviews. The more metal headed among Downloads followers will be disappointed with System of a Down being the only heavier tinged band among the headliners, and many feel Biffy Clyro are more fit for the crowd at T-in the Park than the crowds of a festival that lays on the remains of the once Monsters of Rock Festival in the 80's - 90's.

Donington has long been known as the spiritual home of rock, with download being located here since 2003 and many more rock festivals taking place in the decades before it - including Ozzfest in 2002. From my perspective, this year will not disappoint the rock gods. The headline acts themselves are known to be top level musicians, and the other names referenced in the line up poster are equally as good. I would certainly say that this festival is one to be excited about.

Your Friday Night Headliners

System of a Down

Can you name a band that is loved by so many people, from so many different walks of life and musical tastes, that still to this day can get a party jumping and headbanging quite like System of a Down? No, me neither. In fact on Halloween a DJ at a party i was at dropped Chop Suey and the crowd lapped it up like a dog drinking water from its bowl.

First playing Download, headlining in 2005, and then coming back 6 years later in 2011 to rock the Donington Park crowd, this newest 6 year year hiatus from the festival has left many people excited to see the Californian American-American Heavy metal band return.

With metal classics such as Chop Suey and Toxicity under their belts, this is sure to be a headline set to watch.

Your Saturday Night Headliners

Biffy Clyro

The Scottish rockers that many love have created somewhat of a controversy amongst Downloaders. A band seen more at Reading festival festival and T-in the Park, many metal heads are questioning whether they are Download worthy. Personally i believe this to be an outrageous complaint, though yes their alternative style is more suitable for wanna-be punk rockers and their fellow Scotsmen, these Scottish rockers have a back catalogue of hits, and have proven at many stomping crowds that they are more than worthy of headlining a festival.

I personal struggled, i admit, to forgive them for allowing that X-Factor contestant Matt Cardle ruin Many of Horror back in 2010. But since the release of 2013 Opposites with songs such as Black Chandelier and the more recent Ellipsis released earlier this year - pulling on singles such as Wolves of Winter, i thoroughly believe that those of the Download crowd who doubt them and are even angry at their position on the line-up, will be pleasantly surprised at the set these rockers will bring to Donington Park in June next year.

Check out Biffy at Reading this year, below.

Your Sunday Night Headliners

Pun alert.

I'm definitely excited to Walk This Way to see Aerosmith smash some of their Hard Rock classics out as they entertain the Donington Park crowd and take us back to the 70's, 80's and 90's... Jesus they've been round a while. That is why its so exciting to have them play the classic rock slot on the Sunday at Download next year. They have literally tonnes of hits and they are sure to produce a set that will blow any listener away. You really won't want to Miss a Thing of Aersosmith's set. (Sorry I had too)

I doubt - rather unfortunately - Run DMC will appear on stage to help with Walk this Way, but with 28 tours under their belt since their club playing days of 1970-1972 the experience in this Boston bred band is a sure shot to create an epic closing show to Download 2017.

Do Not Miss

Prophets of Rage

Before I mention the other names on the list, I must first highlight a band name on this list that many will not know. That name is Prophets of Rage. Although actually, you will know them, just not in the form they are now.

This Rap-rock supergroup is formed of three members of Rage Against the Machine (bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello, and drummer Brad Wilk), two members of Public Enemy (DJ Lord and rapper Chuck D), and rapper B-Real of Cypress Hill. That is an exciting roll call if you ask me. With Public Enemy not only being one of the greatest Hip-hop collectives and Political commentators, and Rage being an equally political group, mixed with the skills found in B-reals MCing this is bound to be an extremely special set of Anger and Mosh-pits. Do not miss this,

Also on your line-up

Californian thrash metal band Slayer will be shredding the main stage next year at Donington park bringing with them hits such as Raining Blood and Seasons in the Abyss, this is a set that would be foolish to miss by any thrash metal fan and Slayer is known for having a strong following, so it is sure to be a packed out crowd.

Rob Zombie brings his solo act to Donington Park next year, bringing his own unique metallic style with hits such as Hands of Death (Burn Baby Burn) and Living Dead Girl. Who knows, we might even get some White Zombie treats through the set.

Other names to mention include Of Mice and Men, Simple Plan and Sleeping with sirens, all big names in the game right now.

To summarise, I believe next year's Download is already shaping up to be a great one. Though many are disappointed, I believe the headliners were some of the best in the game during their time, and Biffy Clyro is still a strong rock band and will shock many with their set.

Prophets of Rage is an extremely exciting prospect, and by the osunds of their music so far, will be a very good super group. This set is especially one not to miss. As for the other names of the list, they equally do not fail to impress. I believe the next announcement will be full of wonderfully big names and will satisfy all those who feel a little defeated by this first one.

Don't forget there is always other stages that promote great music even if you still are not won over by this.
