Ghost Cat

Ellen Page is one of those actresses that stands out as a lead character, but offers a superb performance in backup roles with less notice. Once you know who Ellen Page is you want to see more and enjoy her non-leading roles better.

You are here because you saw Ms. Page act in one of a few movies: Inception, Juno, X-Men: The Last Stand, or Whip It. I first noticed Page in Inception and when researching more of her movies, found I had her on my shelf already(X-Men: The Last Stand.) The good news is that she is a prolific actress. If you enjoyed her work in popular movies, you have ample opportunity to view more of her acting in her lesser known works.

Many of Page’s movies were hard or impossible to find in the past. With her popularity rising, her earlier work is getting re-released and is available on Netflix and for purchase on eBay and Amazon. Most Ellen Page movies and TV series are available for sale somewhere. As I review her movies, I will provide information on where to buy that movie. I know you will enjoy as much as I do.

The Early Years

Ellen’s earliest work has some real gems. Her first movie (made for TV), Pit Pony, earned her two award nominations. Pit Pony became a television series with 29 episodes, aired in Canada.

With a solid start to her career, Ellen should have been noticed right away. Instead, she had to work hard to get additional roles. Pit Pony came out in 1997 when Page was 10 years old and the series in 1999 and 2000. From the end of Pit Pony until the end of 2004, she worked hard performing in 12 movies. This list of her early movies is the hardest to find for purchase. The most notable performances include: Marion Bridge, Ghost Cat, ReGenesis, and Wilby Wonderful.

Ellen Page has a consistency rare among even the biggest stars in Hollywood. You can see the talent in her early work without any effort. The flavor of her early movies are different from her most recent work, but Ellen is still in there, loud and clear, including her trademark smile.

Viewing Ellen Page’s early work is most rewarding. Here we see a talented actress unadulterated by Hollywood. Her passion for acting shines through in every scene she graces. Here is the complete list of Ellen’s early work:

Wilby Wonderful

The early movies in Ellen Page's career are low budget films. Don't expect all the pretty color and lights of Inception. What the early movies provide is a story. And who doesn't love a great story. Also note that Ellen plays a small role in many of these films.

A Rising Star

Ellen Page hits the big-time from 2005 to 2007, making her mark known. It starts in 2005 with Hard Candy, a movie most men will find disturbing and pedophiles will think twice about their lifestyle. In 2006, Page plays a minor role in X-Men: The Last Stand. X-Men is Ellen’s first foray into a major motion picture and gives her the exposure needed to land future significant roles.

2007 is a watermark year for Ellen Page as she plays the leading role in Juno. Out of seven movies in these three years, three are career enhancing. The films in this era have a higher budget and wider distribution.

The awards started piling up with Hard Candy, The Tracey Fragments and Juno. The nominations arrived rapid-fire.

Here is the movie list in order of release (2005-2007):

Hard Candy

2005-2007 Movie List

Hard Candy

Mouth to Mouth

X-Men: The Last Stand

An American Crime

The Tracey Fragments

Juno

The Stone Angel

The Tracey Fragments

Juno

The Star Ascending

From 2008 – 2010, Ellen Page adds seven roles to her resume. Ellen strays from traditional roles to guest star on The Simpsons and narrating an environmental documentary, Vanishing of the Bees. The most significant role is her career comes with Inception, a mega-blockbuster with a long line up of super stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio. Only the most talented actress could play the role of Ariadne and make it work. Ellen Page excels beyond anything the director could expect. Inception is the kind of film that will catapult Ellen through the rest of her career.

After Inception, Ellen played Libby in the small budget film Super. After the head rush caused by Inception, Super was a colossal letdown. Ellen plays a smallish role in the movie as a superhero. The writing, acting, and directing all disappoint.

Whip It

2008-2010 acting list:

Smart People

The Simpsons

Whip It (My all-time favorite Ellen Page movie.)

Vanishing of the Bees

Peacock

Inception

Super

**My all-time favorite Ellen Page movie is Whip It. Other movies loved by others (Juno) don’t excite me as much. I enjoy independent films a lot. Low budget films can work for me if done well. But Whip It gets me more excited than any other Page film other than Inception.

Upcoming Movies

Ellen Page keeps herself busy. Her efforts are our entertainment. Nero Fiddled, a Woody Allen film,is coming out in 2012. Ellen pleases us with her presence twice in 2013 with Freeheld and The East.

I can’t wait to watch.
