Falling Skies Season Premiere

Updated on October 17, 2012

Falling Skies - New Sci-fi TV Show

I have to say I have been hearing a lot about this new TV show coming out on the 19th of June 2011 called Falling Skies.

I am a huge science fiction fan and have been really disappointed with what has been happening with sci-fi programs across the board. Most of my favorite shows have been cancelled such as Smallville, although it had a decent run so I can't complain there. However, I have to say I am sorely disappointed with the cancellation of V and The Event. The only decent thing left is Fringe, which I absolutely love!

I really hope Falling Skies can fill the gap. It has big shoes to fill.

Will Falling Skies Last?

Before I watch a new TV show, especially a sci-fi program, I really want to know if it will be renewed. That's almost impossible to do but there's nothing I hate more than getting into a new show only to have it cancelled and left with a number of pressing questions because it was never wrapped up or concluded.

Falling Skies is diifferent. It's diffferent because it was written by Robert Rodat, who wrote Saving Private Ryan. However, what is even more impressive is that it is being directed by Steven Spielberg. With Spielberg behind the helm of Falling Skies it should be a great series as he is the king of sci-fi. Anyone remember ET by any chance?

Also, because Spielberg is on board there is already talk of a season 2 of Falling Skies, before the 2 hour premiere has even aired!! Unbelievable. We can only guess that because of Spielberg's busy schedule TNT have tried to book him before he is taken elsewhere. Rumor is as long as the premiere of Falling Skies is a hit the show will be green lighted for a second season. Here's hoping!

What is Falling Skies About?

Falling Skies appears to be about the planet Earth, 6 months after an alien invasion. The aliens did not come in peace but instead set about destroying the human race. As a result, the humans have had to retreat, regroup, reassess and now are seeking revenge.

Although this sounds a little like V I think this will be different because the aliens have made it clear they are not pretending at peace, nor do they appear to look human. It is clearly an all out war. Also Falling Skies is set 6 months after the invasion and is likely to be about the human struggle to deal with their new lives. How will they deal with the military aspect versus the human emotional aspect?

From what I have seen and read, it seems the aliens are interested in the children. They seem to take them and it is not quite clear why yet. This will probably be the central question running throughout the series, keeping us glued to the screen to find out the answer. Is there a reason they chose to conquer our planet?

Cast of Falling Skies

So far there is only limited knowledge about Falling Skies as it is set to premiere in a few weeks on TNT. We do know that Noah Wyle has been cast as Tom Mason. You may remember Noah Wyle from ER back in the 90's. Noah Wyle plays a history professor who must use his knowledge of historic battles to try and fight the aliens in order to survive and find his son.

Moon Bloodgood has been cast as Anne Glass, a pediatrician who must now become a doctor to the surviving humans in their group. You may remember Moon Bloodgood from Journeyman (another great show that got cancelled way too early). No doubt there will be some kind of chemistry between her and Noah Wyle, every good story demands one love interest. It's the usual scenario in most drama's.

Other actors listed are the likes of Will Patton, Dale Dye, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, Colin Cunningham and Sarah Carter. Don't worry if you have never heard of some of these people. I am sure they will become household names in the near future. If they don't then this will be another show on the scrapheap.

Falling Skies Fans

Falling Skies is being marketed very heavily and there have been a number of trailers and news stories about the upcoming premiere. If you wish to find out more information or view some of the trailers then please check out the Falling Skies fansite. I hope you will join me in watching the 2 hour pilot of Falling Skies on the 19th June 2011. I really hope Falling Skies will go the distance and be renewed for many seasons in the future. Is it too much to hope for 1 full sci-fi run?

Falling Skies season 2 will air on TNT on the 17th of June 2012.
