Famous Cummings Poem Inspires List Of Fifteen Songs Beginning With "In"
Peter Gabriel Made This list With His Biggest Hit
Some of the greatest bands of all time have songs on this list
To celebrate its 100th birthday, you should really invite the goat-footed balloon man. He would be the most suitable guest of all, a creation of one of America's most enduring poets, EE Cummings.
In-just is a short, delightful work of verse about children splashing around in puddles, enjoying the first weeks of spring. All the while, however, there is a disturbing element throughout, as this balloon vendor with goat feet "whistles far and wee."
Even if you cannot find a balloon man, let alone one who possesses goat feet, you can still celebrate the upcoming centennial of the famous poem. For your playlist let me recommend these fifteen songs, all with titles beginning with the preposition IN.
1. In My Life by The Beatles
One of the most beautiful songs ever written by John Lennon, it can serve as a soundtrack for either weddings or funerals.
2. In Quintessence by Squeeze
Glenn Tilbrook credits Elvis Costello for inspiring the riff in this opening track from East Side Story, which also shines because of Chris Difford's lyrics.
3. In Only Seven Days by Queen
Bassist John Deacon contributed this ballad of a short romance, one of the many gems found on the quartet's Jazz album.
4. In the Navy by the Village People
Whether or not it was intended to boost military recruiting, this follow up to "YMCA" kept the band from becoming one-hit wonders.
5. In My World by the Moody Blues
Long Distance Voyager hit number one of the album chart in 1981, primarily because of this John Lodge track and hits such as "The Voice" and "Gemini Dream."
6. In My Room by the Beach Boys
This single about inside solitude might seem a little out of place on an album titled Surfer Girl.
7. In a Godda Da Vida by Iron Butterfly
Legend has it that the psychedelic band arrived at this unusual title while slurring a phrase about being in the garden Of Eden.
8. In the Middle of the Night by Billy Joel
Its official title is River of Dreams, which is also the name of the Grammy-winning album.
9. In Terms of Two by Chicago
Peter Cetera composed this love tune, which appeared on the album Chicago XI.
10. In the City by the Eagles
The Long Run would be their last studio record for two decades, but it is chock full of hits like the title track, "Heartache Tonight" and "I Can't Tell You Why" as well as this Joe Walsh classic.
11. In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson
Technically the preposition is omitted from this title track, featuring the dynamic combination of Robert Fripp lyrics and Greg Lake vocals.
12. In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel
Years after leaving Genesis, the "Shock the Monkey" mastermind topped the charts with this unlikely love duet.
13. In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry
Standing out for its obvious theme, this hit also endures because of its outstanding percussion.
14. In the Shadows by the Stranglers
Naturally this track would be on the dark side of the punk quartet's excellent Black and White album.
15. In My Younger Days by the Eels
Mark Oliver Everett, better known simply as E., wrote this nostalgic number for the End Times record.
