Hilarious Adventures of Trunk Monkey
If you’ve never seen the Trunk Monkey TV commercial ad series, you’ve missed a lot of good laughs. Trunk Monkey was originally created in January, 2000 by Sean Sosik-Hamor for an automotive group of Subaru enthusiasts in New England.
The original was a small stuffed monkey placed in the trunk of a vehicle which came alive and jumped around to distribute weight during extreme driving tactics.
In 2003 the Trunk Monkey began being featured in a series of television ads for the Suburban Auto Group of Sandy,
Oregon. It was licensed to at least 45 car dealerships in the United States and in New Zealand. The lone chimp was funnier than “a barrel of monkies.”
The Trunk Monkey was a fictionalized option available to be installed on their vehicles.
This “option” came in the form of a live chimpanzee that remained in the trunk until a special button on the dash was pushed by the driver. The button was to be pressed in situations not normally encountered in daily traffic.

When the button was engaged the Trunk Monkey jumped out of the trunk and then handled drivers with a case of road rage, dealt with police officers intent on issuing a speeding ticket, delivered babies who refused to wait until reaching a hospital or thrashed a ruthless street gang.
He also doubled as a car security system. One commercial had him knocking out a would-be car thief and tossing the body off a bridge. The chimpanzee could also administer first aid, double as a chaperone on a daughter’s first date or fend off an alien invasion.
