In about 14 days as of the publication of this article, Honey Popcorn, the newest K-pop girl group, will make their debut. Prior to the event, they are already making headlines in K-pop and Hallyu news simply because of one detail: all three members are Japanese AV actresses.

Back on February 23, 2018, Korean news outlet Sports Chosen reported that JAV (Japanese adult video) actress Yua Mikami will be making her debut as a K-pop idol this year. Initially to most, the concept seems a bit farfetched as many argued that the JAV angle does not equate to being a K-pop idol. However, Mikami was a member of Japanese idol group SKE48 before she left to pursue her JAV career.

Three days later on February 26, 2018, AllKpop reported that two more members would be joining Honey Popcorn, Miko and Sakura. Both of them were also former members from Japanese idol groups, the former forrmerly Okada Risako in NMB48 and the latter formerly Ito Yuu in Bakusute Sotokanda Icchome. It should also be noted both were also JAV models.

Honey Popcorn already making waves in the K-pop community!

Despite the fact all three members of Honey Popcorn are former idol members meaning they have training in both singing and dancing, K-pop fans are mixed on their debut. Obviously most of the criticisms point to the fact they were JAV actresses, but to be honest, that has nothing to do with how successful they can be as a K-pop girl group. Besides, if they were to use their sex appeal to push their music, it wouldn't be the first time a K-pop girl group has. EXID, Stellar, and Girl's Day are notorious for using (and at times abusing) the sexy concept. And to be frank, it looks like Honey Popcorn's debut will be innocent.

A more thought-provoking critical assessment points to the fact the members are all Japanese and may not assimilate well into K-pop in comparison to having at lease one Korean member. That is a probable issue but with K-pop being huge in Japan thanks to girl groups like Girls' Generation and Kara, the J-pop industry have a more thorough understanding on how the K-pop industry works. Ergo, Honey Popcorn might do just fine once they make their debut.

Speaking of their debut, Honey Popcorn will make theirs later this month. It will happen in the YES24 Live Hall on March 14, 2018 at 7 p.m. KST.
