Jimmy vs. Warren - The Battle of the Buffetts

Updated on September 5, 2016

Here we have two very well known and established men, each very successful in his own right. They share the same last name, but are two very different people. One likes to party, the other likes to work. It's Buffett rules to the Buffet rule, from Key West to Omaha. But maybe they're not as different as we think. Here we pit them head to head in a comparison, let’s begin.

Money

Jimmy –No slouch in this department, According to Celebrity Net Worth, Jimmy’s worth somewhere around $400 million. Along with his very successful musical career, he owns a chain of Margaritaville restaurants and get this, has three #1 best selling books to his credit. Not too shabby.

Warren – Few people are going to win this battle. According to Forbes, Warren Buffett’s 2011 net worth was in the $50 billion range, good for #3 in the world. Enough said.

Fans

Jimmy –Jimmy Buffett has a legion of fans known as Parrotheads. Selling out any venue he performs, sometimes within minutes of going on sale. The Parrotheads vary from college age to elderly. You will see successful doctors and lawyers drinking beer and cutting loose at a Buffett (Jimmy) concert. The best part of a Jimmy Buffett concert is the tailgating, as the fans go all out with themes and costumes.

Warren – I’m not sure of the actual number of fans Warren has. It’s safe to assume however, that it is drastically smaller than Jimmy’s. I’m sure there have been numerous book reports and Wall Street Journal articles on Warren, but he’s going to lose this one.

Advantage: Jimmy

Longevity

Jimmy -At 65, Jimmy Buffet has been in the music industry for quite some time now. Beginning as acountry artist in the 1960s and then forming his laid back beach style in the 70's, his appeal has stood the test of time. With 17 gold and platinum records, jimmy is still recording and touring today with no sign of letting up.

Warren - Born in 1930 and making his first million by 1962, Warren Buffett has stood the test of time and is one of the most successful business men of our time. He is still making headlines today, and should be able to make a few more billion before it's all over.

Advantage: Warren

Name Recognition

Jimmy –In America, Jimmy Buffett's name is synonymous with partying and a good time. He’s known as the guy in lying in a hammock on a beach, strumming a guitar after a few coronas.

Warren – Business types and Wall Street know Warren. His success is legendary. The Wizard of Omaha had made his first million at just over 30 and never looked back. These days he’s well known for his philanthropy and his outspoken statements on the tax code.

Advantage: Jimmy

Influence

Jimmy –Jimmy’s influence is mainly music based. Many opening acts have gone on to have successful careers. He’s well known in the entertainment business, but has great business acumen as well. He’s made cameos in major movies, and has licensed his own brand of Margarittaville tequila, foods, and even flip-flops. His charitable work has provides relief for hurricane victims and children in need. He has performed many charitable concerts for different organizations..

Warren -In 2008, Warren Buffett was the world’s richest man. He’s always in the top five, and with money comes power. The legendary investor is in a league of his own when it comes to influence. The son of a U.S. representative, Warren’s influence on politics is widely known. His name has come up in the past in connection with economic advisor and even Secretary of Treasury. His charitable donations are too vast to name. The Buffet Foundation is used to manage his donations, and Buffett has said will receive the bulk of his assets upon his death.

Advantage: Warren

Okay, so there we have it. Warren takes the edge in the battle of the Buffetts, but Jimmy has nothing to be ashamed about. Both have a ton of money and are hugely successful. Both give substantial amounts to charity. One plays a guitar, the other plays the market. They share a last name but from what I’ve found, there is no relation. Just a couple of old rich dudes that are very good at what they do.
