Laughter is Medicine: Humor Relieves Stress

By Dexter Yarbrough. The sound of laughter is much more capable of being spread than any sneeze, cough or sniffle. When laughter is shared, people bond together. As such, happiness and intimacy increase. In addition to the positive effect of joy and amusement, laughter also brings about healthy physical changes in the body. Even research has shown that the health benefits of laughter are extensive. Studies have shown that laughter and humor strengthens our immune system, boosts our energy, diminishes pain and protects us from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this medicine is fun and free! Yes!

Benefits of Laughter

Laughter has many other benefits. It decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thereby improving our resistance to disease. Laughter also increases blood flow and improves the function of blood vessels, which can help protect the heart against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. Laughter provides for the release of endorphins, which are the body’s feel-good chemicals. These chemicals promote an overall sense of well-being and may relieve pain temporarily. In addition, a good laugh relives tension and stress, thus leaving your muscles relaxed even 45 minutes later.
