Magic Mike, review
2012, **.5, R
Starring: Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey
TAKE IT OFF! Well they all kinda do that in this women screaming movie, but honestly, “Magic Mike,” was hot, but not very magical. It’s basically a sexier version of his 2006 film, “Step Up,” which was shot in Baltimore, MD, and it centers around Tatum’s dancing ability, which he is first and foremost, the acting kinda fell in his lap; hence the rugged good looks, and he fits into just about any movie.
Mike aka Magic Mike (Channing Tatum, “GI Joe,” “The Eagle”) is one of the hottest performer’s at Xquisite a strip club owned by Dallas (Matthew McConaughey, “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Fool’s Gold”). Essentially by day Mike is trying to get a loan with a bundle of cash to start his homemade eclectic furniture to get out of the stripping business, but keeps getting denied because of his bad credit. By night he dances til he is grinding on the floor for the ladies. He meets Adam (Alex Pettyfer, “Beastly,” “In Time,”) who is down on his luck and was dropped of a college sports scholarship, and living with his sister Joanna. He meets Adam on a roofing job, and tells him to stop by the club, and he winds up getting Dallas to let him do some dance routines. Dallas winds up liking the youngster, and calls him “The Kid.”
Meanwhile, Adam’s sister Joanna (Olivia Munn, TV’s “The Newsroom,” “The Babymakers”) starts to fall slowly for Mike and question him about stripping and begins to get very concerned for her brothers safety, and involvement with drugs and stripping. Mike assures her he will watch over Adam, and begins to constantly flirt with her, falling hard very fast. But she is a difficult nut to crack, and he’s not used to that, because of his “Magic” status.
The film makes you realize that these guys might rake in the dough, but in the end, stripping isn’t a career where people look up to you; they wonder why you are doing such a degrading thing, exploiting yourself; the whole: sex, drugs and rock n roll, deal. You get my drift. And Mike realizes this, and in order to get the girl in the end he must make a fast decision. Just watch it ladies if you haven’t already, I know you want to! It’s worth a watch, but don’t buy it!
