Movies Often Unseen but Perfect for Halloween
There's something for everyone in this list and I think it's a good one. So, let's begin.
1. Teen Wolf - 1985
Teen Wolf
This movie is not one that I've personally seen or remember seeing but it does belong on this list. This movie stars Michael J Fox as Scott Howard a teenager, who is also a werewolf. If you're looking to be scared, this movie wouldn't do the trick, but if you're looking to laugh it would because it's classified as Fantasy/Comedy.
Summary: This movie is about an average teenager who's not happy being average. Despite being on his high school basketball team which gives him some popularity, he's still tired of being like everyone else. Well, things change when odd things start happening to him that aren't the average things to happen to a teenage boy. One night after a party he comes home and transforms into a werewolf. Obviously, average is no longer an issue for him.
This movie is rated PG, so it can be watched by the whole family.
2. Coneheads- 1993
Coneheads
This movie is one of my favorites from the 90's. I must have seen it a gazillion times. Though not actually about anything necessarily pertaining to Halloween, it is about aliens with cone shaped heads who come to earth. This started out as a Saturday Night Live skit before they made it a movie, which is a cool fact to know . Anyway, I think this is an unconventional but good pick for a Halloween movie. It's classified as Sci-Fi / Comedy and it stars Dan Ackroyd and Jane Curtain.
Summary: This movie is about two aliens named Beldar and his mate Prymaat. Their spaceship crashes into the Atlantic Ocean. This movie shows how they adapt to life on earth. They get jobs, buy a house and even have a daughter all in attempt to blend in. Which works, up until the point they are discovered by the government. It might not sound like it but it really is a good movie. it's certainly worth a try.
This movie is rated PG and I wouldn't say it's a family movie but it's not riddled with inappropriate stuff either. So, if you choose to let your children watch I don't think it would be a problem.
3. The Mask- 1994
The Mask
This movie is another one of my favorites from the 90's. I even have it on VHS cassette tape (those were the days). I know this isn't about anything Halloween related, but it is about a guy who finds a mask which turns him into someone else. So, it fits perfect in the confines of Halloween movie material. The movie is classified as Fantasy / Comedy and it stars Jim Carey and Cameron Diaz. *Note* This is Cameron Diaz's first movie, the one that started it all for her.
Summary: This movie is about a guy named Stanley Ipkiss who works as a bank clerk and is quite timid. He's basically a doormat even to his dog Milo. One night his car breaks down on a bridge and he see's what seems to be a person in the water. He jumps in to save them. Turns out it wasn't a person but instead just trash. Upon that trash he finds this mask. He takes it home with him and eventually puts it on. When he does he transforms into a charismatic wise cracker who does what he doesn't have the courage to do as Stanley.
This movie is rated PG-13, so it's best suited for teens and adults.
4. What Lies Beneath- 2000
What Lies Beneath
I've seen this movie twice and it's very good. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's not a scary movie but it is classified as Fantasy / Mystery which makes it perfect for Halloween. There are a lot of twists and turns, which is what everyone wants from a movie. This film stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford.
Summary: This movie is about a housewife who thinks there's something bad going on between the husband and wife across the street. She's notices that the neighbor lady hasn't been around in days. After seeing what looks to be a woman in the lake, she's convinced that the neighbor's husband killed her. After an unsuccessful seance, all these weird and unexplained things start happening to her. She's certain it is the neighbor haunting her. As the movie progresses we find out it's not the neighbor at all but somebody she never would have thought it to be.
This movie is rated PG-13 and is more suited for a mature audience.
5. Freaky Friday- 2003
Freaky Friday
I've seen this movie a bunch of times and I even have it on DVD. This 2003 version is a remake of the original movie from 1976. This movie is not scary by any means but it does deal with body swapping which isn't exactly normal, which is why I put it on the list. It's classified as Fantasy / Romance and it stars Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray.
Summary: This movie is about a mother and a daughter named Tess and Anna who are two very different people. Like most teenage parent relationships, Tess and Anna don't really see eye to eye on much. Anna is trying to deal with all the changes happening in her life and her mother Tess is dealing with being a single mother, her job and planning for her upcoming wedding. When Anna asked her mother for permission to go to an audition with her rock band, her mom say's "no". That then leads to a huge fight at a Chinese restaurant and them ultimately switching bodies, in which they finally have the chance to actually understand where the other is coming from.
This movie is rated PG, which makes it perfect for a family.
6. Dark Water- 2005
Dark Water
I saw this movie a few times. It's very creepy but also turns out to be sad. It's still a good movie for Halloween. This 2005 movie is an American version of a Japanese movie from 2002. Though it's not filled with scream worthy scenes, it is filled with very eerie and disturbing things which is why it's probably classified as Horror / Suspense. This film stars Jennifer Connelly.
Summary: This movie is about a woman named Dahlia who's fighting her ex for custody of their daughter Cecilia. Her ex wants his daughter close by. Dahlia decides to move with her daughter to an apartment that is a fixer upper. There is a dark spot on the ceiling and after they move in it starts to leak dark colored water which comes from the flooded apartment above. Many strange things happen to both Dahlia and her daughter Cecilia after that. How it turns out, is not what you would expect it to be.
This movie is rated PG-13 and is best for the not easily frightened and the mature.
7. The Messengers- 2007
The Messengers
I've seen this movie a bunch of times and have it on DVD. It's quite a good movie. It is scary but not like it would be in a slasher film. Since this movie deals with many creepy elements, it's why I put it on the list. It's classified as Mystery / Horror and it stars Kristen Stewart, Dylan McDermott and Penelope Ann Miller.
Summary: This movie is about a family who moves from Chicago to a small North Dakota town to get a fresh start after an accident occurred. Their teenage daughter Jess was drunk while driving with her little brother Ben in the car. Odd things start happening around the house, things of the strange and not easily explained. Jess is not easily trusted by her parents after what happened in Chicago, so they are not so quick to believe her about the weird things going on. Jess is determined to figure out what's going on and prove what she claims is happening is actually true. My description of this movie doesn't do it justice, so it's best to watch it and find out for yourself.
This movie is rated PG-13 but is scary at times, so it's best for adults.
8. The Vacancy- 2007
The Vacancy
I've only seen this movie once but it was enough to leave an impact on me and make me remember it, which is important for a movie to do. It was scary but thrilling, which is why it's on the list. It's certainly a movie worth watching. It's classified as a Crime / Horror and it stars Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale.
Summary: This movie is about husband and wife named David and Amy, who happen to be having some marriage issues. On the way back from a party their car breaks down and they realize they don't have cell service, leaving them basically stranded. They walk to a motel and end up getting a room there. Once inside the motel room they hear strange sounds and odd things seem to happen. David (the husband) discovers cameras in their room and realizes they are being watched by the manger from his office, which now leaves them basically trapped and fighting to survive.
This movie is rated R, so it's only suitable for adults.
9. Fun Size- 2012
Fun Size
This movie was on T.V. once and I decided to watch it not expecting much but it was actually pretty good. Though nothing scary happens in the movie, it is about a teenage girl's Halloween plans being ruined. So, being as it's about Halloween I thought it deserved a place on this list. It's classified as Adventure / Comedy and it stars Victoria Justice, Chelsea Handler and Jane Levy.
Summary: This movie is about a teenage girl named Wren who was invited to a Halloween party with her friend April. They have all intentions of going, but plans change when Wren's mother tells her to take her little brother Albert trick or treating and she agrees. Wren, her little brother Albert and her friend April end up at a haunted house. While there they run into another friend in which during this time Wren discovers her little brother has run off by himself. She now goes on a quest to find him. It may not sound like much but it's a actually worth watching.
This movie is rated PG-13, it would be a good movie for teens and young adults.
10. The Visit- 2015
The Visit
I saw this movie in the theater and I won't pretend that this movie didn't freak me out because it did but that aside it was a good movie. It's definitely scary maybe not in the same way Nightmare on Elm Street is. It's still a movie that if you want to be scared on Halloween, this would do that. That is why it's on the list. It's classified as Mystery / Horror and it stars Kathryn Hahn, Olivia DeJorge and Ed Oxenbould.
Summary: This movie is about a sister and brother named Becca and Tyler who are going to be visiting their grandparents, who their mother hasn't spoken to in years. They are going to stay there while their mother goes on a cruise. Since they would be meeting their grandparents for the first time, they wanted to document it all in video. At first when they meet their grandparents, things seem great. Then they are given the rules of never leaving their room after 9:30 pm and not to go in the basement. As time goes on they start to notice that their grandparents behaviors tend to get stranger as time goes on and, well... I can't tell you what happens next because that would ruin it. I can tell you it's certainly not what you would expect to happen.
This movie is rated PG-13 but due to some scenes, it is probably best for the mature and unsqueamish.
I know all these movies are not common Halloween picks but they all tie into the holiday and that is why I made this list. Hopefully, you enjoyed it and maybe even will consider my recommendations. Either way, Happy Halloween Everyone!
