Movies that keep the tension very high

Updated on February 26, 2015

Its the rare Hollywood movie that keeps the tension very high throughout

One of the things I find most enjoyable about a movie is that rare movie that keeps you at the edge of your seat throughout the entire 2 hours. I am an avid movie goer and I can remember very few movies that just hit a home run when it comes keeping the tension at a high level during the entire movie.

The first one that comes to mind is the movie Aliens which came out in 1986 and was the sequel to the 1979 movie Alien. This movie, like Godfather 2 which came out in 1974 was one of the very rare movies that exceeded the first movie. For Aliens the director James Cameron through great writing and directing kept this movie at a high level of tension throughout the entire 2+ hours of intense action. This movie had a great ending and it was like a thrill ride sitting through this great action movie. Unfortunately the next 3 Alien movies were quite bad and the franchise died a very quick death soon after this second installment.

Another great movie was Micheal Mann's HEAT, which came out in 1995. In my opinion HEAT which starred Al Pacino and Robert Deniro is the greatest police action drama of all time. The bank robbery scene was the best filmed action scene involving guns that I have ever seen in all my years of movie going. Like Aliens in 1986 HEAT kept me at the edge of my seat at a high level of tension throughout the entire movie.

The Exorcist in 1973 is definitely a movie that kept you scared and at the edge of your seat during the entire 2 hours but this movie was extremely hard to sit through because of the depiction of so much evil.

There have been other movies that I remember that kept me at a high level of tension, one honorable mention was the Raid Redemption, which came out in 2012 had contained the most amazing Karate action scenes that I have ever seen. However this movie did not have as much of a script or a story as Heat or Aliens so even though the tension was very high during the whole two hours, there was not enough quality for the RAID Redemption to put this movie at the level of Aliens or Heat.
