Music that stays on
I learnt Jamaican Farewell back in primary school as part of Western Music Classes I used to attend. One of my favourites, I later found it amongst my dad’s old English song cassette collection. It has been twenty years and I don’t think I will ever forget the lyrics of this beautiful song by Harry Belafonte. It is from an album called Calypso which was released in 1956.
500 miles – heard this song during my early school years and heard so many versions later on. Can’t figure who sang the original and when but find this version the best. Seems perfect for a generation of hard working people trying to make a better life for themselves
On board an Air France flight from Paris to Geneva was being played this very foot tapping song which I had never heard. It was only instrumental but very catchy and then I plugged into the seat music system and found the song there too. All I could gather from the lyrics was - Driving away from home thirty miles or more...Later when I got back home, I searched for the very lyrics on You Tube and found the song dated back to 1986 and was sung by ‘It’s Immaterial’. They were a band from Liverpool, England. Nice number!
