My Kind Of Music VIII...Bobby Blue Bland

Updated on December 19, 2012

My all time favorite Blues Man

When I think of the blues, this is the first name that comes to mind, I think I have everything he has ever made. I intended to add him to my tribute on the article, My Kind of Music...Blues, but Mr. Bland deserves an article all of his own. Take a listen, and see if you don't agree.

A little about Bobby Blue Bland

Bobby Blue Bland was born Robert Calvin Bland, on January 27, 1930, at Rosemark, Tennessee, USA. Bland never really made it to the mainstream market, however, he never lost favor on the R&B charts. It was in this market that he had 23 Top Ten hits on the Billboard R&B charts. Another accolade that was bestowed upon Mr. Bland, he was rated the 13th all-time best selling artist.

Mr. Bland, was said to be one of the main creators of the modern soul-blues sound. The sound was a mixture of blues, gospel, and R&B. There is much more to his life, please go over and get more information from his website.

Please take time to listen to the listed songs, I guarantee if you like this kind of music, you will thoroughly enjoy these selections, even if you're not you might still enjoy them.

I'll Take Care Of You

I'll Take Care Of You

I'll Take Care Of You is a single that was record in 1959 on the Duke Records label. The flip side of the record was the song, That's Why. Before I go any further into this let me explain what I mean when I say flip side.  Just in case anyone under 25 is reading this, back in the day we didn't have cassette tapes, or Cd's, we had "records," which had a song recorded on each side. At times both sides became hits.

That's the Way Love Is

That's The Way Love Is

That's The Way Love Is, was recorded in 1962 on the Duke Records label.  On the flip side of this hit was another hit, Call On Me.

St James Infirmary

St James Infirmary

St James Infirmary came to be one of Mr. Bland's biggest hits, with another equally mega hit, Don't Cry No More on the flip side.  The record was recorded in 1961 on the Duke Records label.

Little Boy Blue

Little Boy Blue

Oh, this is one of my all time favorites of Mr. Bland's.  Little Boy Blue, was recorded in 1958, on the Duke Records label.  The flip side of this one was Last Night. Say girls, some of you might want to play this for your neglectful mate.

Cry Cry Cry

Cry Cry Cry

Cry Cry Cry, was recorded in 1961, on the Duke records label, with the flip side being, I've Been Wrong So Long. Just a side note, it's been said, most of Mr. Bland's hits of the 50's and 60's were written by Joe Scott, the artist's band leader and arranger.

I Pity the Fool

This song, I Pity The Fool, was recorded in 1961, on the Duke Records label, with the flip side being, "Close To You." Even though Mr. T. made this phrase popular, Mr. Bland had already popularized it through this R&B Top Ten hit.

Conclusion

These songs I listed are by far not all of my favorites by Mr. Bland, but the only ones I could list and keep the article within a reasonable readable time frame.  So, if you'd like to hear more go over to YouTube and check out Mr. Bland's recording.

Alright Freta, this one's a home run. The first time I saw Bobby was in 1975 at The RKO Palace in Cincinnati on the same bill with BB King. I've seen him twice since and he still kicks ass. FYI, I took about 100 slides of that first show with BB and have a some nice shots of both. Great hub! Peace!! Tom

I caught up on all my reading and left your hub for last because I knew I'd be here at least an hour.:) I go to your hub and get up and do something constructive. Today I was ironing and crooning. I was looking for an artist that recorded "Little Boy Blue" for my hub "Musical Renditions". Silly me...I forgot all about Bobby Blue Bland. Thanks!

      up/useful, awesome and beautiful

Love love love Bobby Blue Bland. This was my era fastfreta - and all this wonderful talent set the world standard. I felt such pride and still do.

It was great growing up in an era where we had music to dance to, and dedicate to someone, and to have our own special song, and sing along to and just sit and listen.

Now we have the greatest of memories. Thanks a million!

      Rated up of course!

Hello Fastfreta, What a fantastic hub!!!! I grew up listening to Bobby Blue Bland in the 60's and 70's along with my parents. I love the video you posted "I Pity The Fool"; I'm sitting here humming along and shaking my head to this video. It brings back so many memories. Thanks for a wonderful hub.

There's my little songstress. Thanks Nina for stopping. I've been in the dumps for awhile. My brother passed and I had to go to Atlanta to bury him and my mother fell ill, so HubPages has fallen by the wayside. I'm trying to get up the desire to begin my writing again. I've been reading a few hubs, but I just can't seem to get up the energy or mindset to write lately. So again, thank you for stopping.

I send to you sincere condolences on the loss of your brother and I pray that your mom gets better soon. Take your time in getting back to Hubpages, family comes first. We will be here, waiting for some of your wonderful hubs. Be blessed.

Thank you Nina, you're very kind. My mother is doing very well, ergo the reason I left. I'm on the mend, but it takes time. Thank you so much for your condolences and kind words.

I'm old enough for him to be one of my all time favorite performers, as well as my mother's. So now we're all dating ourselves. I have several of his songs on all of my electronic devices, including here on the computer.

Anyway thanks, bodylevive, for stopping, reading and listening.
