My Love of Music as a Female Guitarist.
I have been playing the guitar since I was thirteen years old and I just picked up the bass guitar a year ago. I am also a woman. Now, I know that there are many women out there who can play the guitar extremely well. In these days more and more girls are picking up the guitar and joining bands. Yet, it is still a male dominated area where majority of the bands you hear are all men.
Do not get me wrong, there are many female musicians out there, however I feel like it is mostly on youtube. The fact that this is a male dominated industry, I decided to pursue the guitar when I was young as I was quite adventurous in learning new things and I was playing the piano at the time as well.
Since then I have had a blast playing the guitar, I practiced everyday and had a natural vibe to it. I felt so cool feeling like a rockstar and being a woman in this male dominated interest. The guitar has been like a meditation for me. As it was something I did when I wanted to relax and could play for hours. I never felt out of place being a girl with a guitar.
Let's not forget that there are amazing female guitarists out there, some that are very well known. Who play in bands and that can really shred it. These women not only inspire me to be a better musician but also they give a female role model saying it does not matter who you are as long as you love what you do. Some of them include:
Orianthi
This Australian guitarist not only played alongside Michael Jackson, she also plays along with Alice Cooper. Wrote the hit song "According to You" and won the Breakthrough artist of the year in 2010 by Guitar International Magazine.
Joan Jett
This guitarist got her start in the 1970s in the all female band "The Runaways". She became a huge hit with my band "Joan Jett and the blackhearts". Joan has been an icon in the music industry for years. Her music style and what she believes in is something I definitely look up to.
Courtney Cox
Guitarist for the All-Female band The Iron Maidens (a tribute band to Iron Maiden). She is one of a kind as she has played for many popular bands in the 1980s.
Now I know there are many great musicians out there. Those were some examples of some of the greatest musicians of my time, yet there are too many to list as a matter of fact. Heck, check out Youtube. There are plenty of women doing covers and in bands playing and singing their passion. I want to take my skill to the next level and dream of being in a band one day. Who knows, but I can tell you that I will not stop playing the guitar.
