The Best Horror Films on Netflix

Everyone's favourite instant online movie streaming service, Netflix, has one minor problem, which is the amount of movies which they have available, as this is both a gift and a curse because of the amount of time it takes finding a film worth watching.

This is why I decided to collect the top 10 horror films to watch this month, which will be updated monthly with a couple of new additions replacing a couple of the old.

So, stop wasting time watching the bad movies and get straight to the best which are available at the touch of a button.

Note: If you are not currently a Netflix user, then subscribe at the following link:

UK - This is the link for UK subscribers, simply click on the link, which will take you to the Netflix home page, with a button, which should state, "Start your free month", which will lead to a page asking to fill out personal details. First month is FREE, thereafter the set price each month is £5.99 per month. Now, enjoy streaming instant films/TV series.

US - A similar process to the above. First month is FREE, thereafter the set price each month is $7.99 per month.

Without further ado, here is the list of the best Netflix Instant horrors available at the moment, to stream instantly:

#10 - Vacancy (2007)

Short Review: This is a horror | thriller. The motel's in an isolated area in North America is always a good setting for a horror film, and that is just what we get in this descent horror flick. With a fairly predictable plot, which no one will be too amazed by, but the scares are certainly there.

Not a bad horror film, if your looking for an average evening film to watch with some popcorn, but it wouldn't be a film that I would have liked to have had to lay money down, for a theatre ticket, or a full priced DVD for that matter. On the other hand for a film able to watch on Netflix Instant, it is the perfect horror viewing for a quiet night in.

The film is also helped by the good acting brought to the film by the two stars, Kate Beckinsale (starred in 'Underworld'), and Luke Wilson (starred in 'Old School').

Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Luke Wilson, Frank Whaley

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 6.2/10

IMDb Rating: 6.2/10

Ryan Kwanten and Donnie Wahlberg in "Dead Silence"

#9 - Dead Silence (2007)

Short Review: This is a horror | mystery | thriller. This is a good horror film, which has certainly aimed to achieve success through the fear which a lot of people have of creepy dolls, and it surprisingly worked to some degree. The dolls were creepy, not cheesy like 'Chucky', which was a happy surprise, as that was my original thought before seeing the film.

Not a lot of depth to the characters, which was disappointing, but the acting was acceptable, and it made for a descent horror film, with a few jumpy moments. This isn't the type of horror film which relies on gore, but instead the jumps, which they certainly achieved in doing.

Anyone with a distaste for creepy dolls are likely to both love and hate this film, but remember not to go into watching the film with high expectations, as you will likely be disappointed. A good film which could have been great, but certainly one worth watching on Netflix Instant this month.

Stars: Ryan Kwanten, Donnie Wahlberg, Amber Valletta

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 6.2/10

IMDb Rating: 6.2/10

Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper in "Case 39"

#8 - Case 39 (2009)

Short Review: This is a horror | mystery | thriller. This is a must watch, with a good story, which seems to play off the fear of a demon child, which isn't exactly that original but the story paces well with plenty to fear.

Renee Zellweger performed exceptionally well in this film which really captured the empathy for the child (demon), which overall brought real emotion to an otherwise good but not quite great film. Anyone with any liking for horror films will enjoy the flick, as it takes you on a journey of fear, mystery, and thrills.

A must watch on Netflix Instant, as this has been one of the best horror films I have seen in a long time which didn't rely on blood and gore. Plus, it is also worth mentioning that the liking for demons in films is a real bonus, as to whether or not this is going to be a film for you or not.

Stars: Renee Zellweger, Bradley Cooper, Ian McShane

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 6.5/10

IMDb Rating: 6.2/10

Catherine Hicks and Brad Dourif in "Child's Play"

#7 - Child's Play (1988)

Short Review: This is a horror | thriller. The character 'Chucky' is a scary, crazy, psychopathic doll, which is owned by a young boy with the soul of a dangerous murderer inside of it, which really adds to the fear felt watching the movie.

Although quite an old film now, it is still very much one of the best horror films worth watching, which sadly cannot be said for the sequels which followed.

A must watch for horror fans who don't mind watching an ageing classic, which captured the imagination of a living psychopathic doll, which has no off switch.

Stars: Catherine Hicks, Alex Vincent, Brad Dourif

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 6.6/10

IMDb Rating: 6.5/10

Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler in "The Strangers"

#6 - The Strangers (2008)

Short Review: This is a horror | mystery | thriller. In an isolated house in North America what could possibly happen? Well, as many horror films have shown, including this one, absolutely anything! This film takes fear to the next level, which not everyone can handle, which is why this is not the type of horror film for those who cannot handle the hardcore horrors (not due to excessive blood and gore, but the tormenting of the innocent).

A great horror film, which really pushed the boundaries, in terms of bringing scares to the screen which would make everyone fear living in isolation. Especially good, how they managed to make a great horror film with just a few characters, which doesn't usually work quite as well as this one did.

Hardcore horror fans will be impressed by this creation, but the core fans will probably find the film more disturbing than entertaining, which would likely leave less than positive reviews of the films overall quality.

Stars: Scott Speedman, Liv Tyler, Gemma Ward

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 6.7/10

IMDb Rating: 6.2/10

Justin Long in "Drag Me to Hell"

#5 - Drag Me to Hell (2009)

Short Review: This is a horror | thriller. A great film considering the low budget, and a must watch for all horror fans as it has a good story, which is well paced, with a brilliant horror director, Sam Raimi.

Looking for a good horror film, which will more than likely beat expectations, then this is the one to watch, as I have happily returned multiple times to see this film. Each time it manages to bring fear, just as much as previously, with a few moments when there is humour, which seemed to suit the movie quite well.

Definitely a must watch on Netflix Instant as a lot of the time, great films are a miss on the service, but this one certainly hits the mark on what it is that creates a great budget horror film.

Stars: Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Ruth Livier

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 6.7/10

IMDb Rating: 6.7/10

Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell in "The Crazies"

#4 - The Crazies (2010)

Short Review: This is a horror | mystery | thriller. This is a great horror film, which seems to have gone under the radar, really missing everyone's attention, which is shocking considering how good the film is. A masterpiece in plain site, yet most seem to have overlooked this great film, which manages to grasp the horror and mystery very well with a combined mixture which really does work.

If your not a fan of violence, then this may not be the film for you, but it is certainly entertaining, with great performances from the whole cast, a well paced story, with a brilliant plot, and the perfect ending. A Netflix Instant must watch!

Stars: Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 6.9/10

IMDb Rating: 6.6/10

Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox in "Scream"

#3 - Scream (1996)

Short Review: This is a crime | horror | mystery. This is cult classic which most remember as being their favourite 90's horror film, due to its original story, brilliant killer, and awesome scenes. Th story is well paced, the killer is scary, and the overall movie can be re-watched again and again, and still have the same great feel to it.

Anyone into originality in horror films is likely to like 'Scream', as this is unlike any other horror film ever made, as it almost conquerors every aspect to what creates a great slasher film, without feeling like it is trying to hard.

Apart from the corniness of certain scenes, which in a way both make and ruin the film, it is definitely one of the best horror films ever produced, and one of the best horror films on Netflix Instant.

Stars: Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette

Age: 18 and above

Personal Rating: 7.2/10

IMDb Rating: 7.2/10

Ethan Hawke in "Sinister"

#2 - Sinister (2012)

Short Review: This is a horror | mystery | thriller. The plot is sinister as you might imagine with the title, but the story feels rather mellow, without the gruesome violence hitting the screen every couple of minutes, which I am thankful for. The film relies on jumps to really scare the audience, and having watched the film at the theatre on the big screen and at home on the small screen, I can vouch for that!

Anyone into the modern day horror films, usually age 15 and above (to view), which have plenty of jumpy moments, and very little gore, will love this film as it does just that, and perfectly.

Ethan Hawke, is proving to be the master in horror films, with a better presence there, than in other genres, which isn't proving to be a bad thing, as more and more people are getting into the scare spirit. A must watch on Netflix Instant, which will make for a scary viewing in the evening.

Stars: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 7.2/10

IMDb Rating: 6.8/10

Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne in "Insidious: Chapter 2"

#1 - Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

Short Review: This is a horror | thriller. Following on, right where the first 'Insidious' film left off, the family are continued to be terrorised by paranormal activity. The sequel is just as scary as the first with plenty of jumpy moments, which will require a pillow for emotional protection from the fear caused by what you'll both see and hear.

It had been quite some time since I had personally seen a horror film, which meant I needed to have myself a pillow to cover my eyes, which doesn't say much as I am a wimp, but still has to be an indicator at how scary the film is.

This is an instant pleaser for those looking for a dosage of scares to keep you going, which makes for a great evening fright.

This is Netflix Instants No.1 horror film available right now, so wait no longer, and see the scariest film Netflix Instant has to offer, today, or better yet, tonight!

Stars: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 7.4/10

IMDb Rating: 6.7/10

It may be that you are within a different region, to that of which this list covers, as I live in the UK, and this list covers that of the UK libraries best movies. Sorry if there was any confusion, but thank-you for commenting your concern, Audra.
