Netflix Shows & Films You Should Actually Watch (and Yes, They’re Good!)
1. Cable Girls
Cable Girls really exceeded my expectations. I'd seen it trending, but never actually clicked on it. It takes place in the past where flappers were a thing, so basically sometime in the 1920's. If you like a story containing female friendship, crime, mystery, romance amid other things, then you will definitely enjoy this. It's also important to mention that the two main leads are pretty good looking, although Francisco is the only one that matters. This is in Spanish so make sure to turn on captions/subtitles or audio. I recommend subtitles.
Francisco:
2. House of Flowers
With House of Flowers, I honestly didn't know what to expect. I was overcome with the thought that this could either be a masterpiece or your average soapy telenovela. The director, Manolo Caro, is known for being one of Mexico's best filmmakers alongside the likes of Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron. From what I know, he has yet to crossover to Hollywood. The House of Flowers is very unique. You'll find that it is very modern and a lot more daring than the telenovelas you'll find on Univision or Telemundo. It is about a rich family from Mexico that owns a shop called, you guessed it: The House of Flowers. The series follows the family through various trials and tribulations. It is full of humor and real life happenings. Also, you'll love the drag queens (especially in season 2). You'll also enjoy all the color. This is also in Spanish, but with a sprinkle of English here and there. Season 2 and a special funeral episode is also available as of this year!
3. Club of Crows
Club of Crows is for those that are looking for something to binge watch that will make them laugh a lot and also make them wonder what in the world they are watching. The two leads are the offspring of the owner of a football club called the Cuervos (crows in english). They battle over who will officially take over their father's company and try to sabotage one another. There is also a spin-off titled, "The Ballad of Hugo Sanchez" starring one of the more hilarious characters. The series is also in spanish, but available with subtitles.
4. Terrace House
This is a reality TV show about a group of strangers that live together under one big roof while being filmed. They literally live in a mansion for FREE. It basically showcases how they live together and build relationships that can either be long lasting or tumultuous. A panel, as shown above, basically act in part of the viewers by reviewing and giving their opinion on what they have watched. There are many seasons which include Opening New Doors; one of the most recent. Here is one of the most funniest panel members as well as the one that the western audience (including me) seem to enjoy watching the most for his honest opinions:
5. You
Both the male and female lead were annoying. I, however, could not stop watching? Did Netflix cast some sort of spell on me or was this actually good? Either way, all you need to know is that the main lead is mega creepy and that this is definitely worth watching. Season 2 is out now and on my watch list.
The couple basically:
6. Nailed It!
If you're looking for a baking show that's cute, family friendly, and will make you feel a lot better about your baking skills then this is the one. You may find it to be corny at times, but at the end of the day you can't help, but crack a smile. For more professional competitive baking, watch Sugar Rush.
7. Sin Senos No Hay Paraiso (There Is No Paradise Without Breasts)
This series is set in Colombia, in a time where drug cartels continue to rule. The main lead and her group of friends are young, impressionable girls who fall into the drug lifestyle through escorting and prostitution. Catalina, the main lead, tries her best to get plastic surgery in an attempt to look more pretty and reach the level of her group of friends. It'll suck you right in, baby. There's also two more seasons: Sin Senos Si Hay Paraiso and El Final Del Paraiso.
8. Jane the Virgin
Jane is a young college student when she becomes accidentally inseminated with the child of the son of a rich hotel owner. You can pretty much guess what happens if we're honest. It's last season is coming really soon so make sure to watch it as soon as you can. Yes, I know we can't stand Gina Rodriguez, but this is a GOOD show. If anything, watch it for the actors and story line.
Also:
9. New Girl
This television series has many seasons hence why I decided not to keep watching it. It's still pretty good though, so don't immediately take it as me saying that it's terrible when it's not. I'll probably finish watching this later in my adulthood, but for now I'm good.
10. The Good Place
This is as good as it's hyped up to be. Everyone, I present to you: Modern Comedy. The Good Place is definitely something that people from different generations and walks of life will definitely adore.
11. Catfight
This is a movie that you'll either hate or love. It's about two enemies who go through life trying to one up one another. They fight a lot. To this day, I have no idea what the whole purpose of this movie was. All I know is that for some weird reason, I really liked it. Sandra Oh stars in this and if you haven't watched "Killing Eve" yet, what are you waiting for?
12. Monster in Law
This is a cute and romantic film. That's all you need to know.
13. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is about a young woman that has to rediscover life again after living underground as a mole woman since she was a child. She moves to New York where she meets friends and begins a comedic journey through adulthood in the city. It is absolutely ridiculous. You will love it.
14. The Hookup Plan
The Hookup Plan is basically about a young woman in France whose friends sets her up on a date with a male gigolo. She falls in love hopelessly. Do watch if you are bored, just make sure to turn on the subtitles. It's french.
15. Gossip Girl
This series, bruh. What can I say? It starts off with them as teenagers and ends in their adulthood. It is a rollercoaster of a ride. I can't believe it took me so long to watch.
16. How To Get Away With Murder
When I say watch this show, I mean WATCH this show. The story line is incredibly good and you'll find yourself binge watching this before you know it. The casting is good, the story is good, everything about this is GOOD. It is truly a masterpiece.
17. Sense8
One of the first Netflix series I watched, Sense8 really provides a lot of people with a good amount of romance, action, and more. This was cancelled before it could reach its full potential, however you'll still enjoy watching this sci-fi series. This might not be everyone's cup of tea, though.
18. Chewing Gum
This is a fairly odd, yet humorous series that takes place in the United Kingdom. It follows a young woman from a religious family that deals with issues like sexuality among other things. If you want to be sucked into a black hole, then this is the series you should watch. Unfortunately, it only has two seasons.
19. Mona Lisa Smile
This was a really good film especially for those that want to watch something about a group of young women as they learn about independence among other things. A definite must watch, especially for young women.
20. Roma
Who has not watched this film? This film won so many awards and was in the public eye for so long. It literally made history. Yes, it is in Spanish, but that doesn't mean you can't add captions or audio. A definite must watch. It was emotional and new.
21. Penny Dreadful
I admit that I was hesitant to watch this. I was confused as to why it kept showing up as being popular, but BOY did my mind change after the first episode. This is good. If you like horror and supernatural stuff, then this is your show. If you watched Supernatural, you'll love this.
22. Gilmore Girls
This show has spent so much time on my recommended that I just decided to try it out and BOOM! I loved it. I like that you get to see the different points of view from mother to daughter, and that you watch them grow up throughout the seasons. I like that it's realistic, but there's comedy, love, tragedy, and everything else.
23. Romance Is A Bonus Book
Whether you watch or love Korean dramas, you'll thoroughly enjoy this series. It's about a single mother who has to restart her career from the bottom, but who perseveres. I thought it was cute and a feel-good type of series. If you're looking for something light and fluffy, this is it for you.
There are a lot more films and series on Netflix that I have watched, but sadly for you, I am simply tired and must get my beauty rest. Au Revoir~
Honorable Mention:
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Amelie is a film that I would recommend to curious introverts and extroverts alike. The concept and story line of the film is not only quirky and unique, but inspiring.
