Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
If you have been holding off on seeing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, you can find out here if you should spend the 8 bucks or just wait till it comes out on video.
If you enjoyed the first Pirate's of the Caribbean then you know what to expect in these movies. In this second film William Turner and Elizabeth Swan are in trouble and the only way out of this trouble (I won't tell you what kind of trouble) is to find their long lost friend Jack Sparrow. But before they can live happier ever after, Jack Sparrow throws them all into a quest to find the Dead Man's Chest so he can "work out" a debt he owes to Davy Jones, a squid type pirate with a crew of damned slaves also with marine qualities. In the mix of it all you learn a lot more about Jack Sparrow and his shallow ways and you see a few little scenes that mirrow those in the classic ride of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at the Disney parks. This movie is almost 3 hours long and the whole time it's basically action the whole time. Although a lot of the action is none stop, it comes off very fake and cheesy by the way they do things. Although this doesn't really bother me because it is a movie and movies are supposed to be fun, I have noticed that other people were turned off by that. There is a lot more humor in this film and a little too much. I don't think I would have noticed all that much but people in the theatre were really annoying by cheering and clapping and making themself laugh at jokes that weren't really all that hilarious. The whole plot of the movie was actually pretty deep but sometimes hard to follow, I think more so just because I had trouble understanding the "argggg" accents of the pirates. One thing about the plot in this movie is that it really doesn't end in this movie. The end of the movie leaves way too many loose ends and it is obviously set up for the next one which is done being filmed I believe but still doing all the editing. If you saw The Matrix Revolutions then you know what I mean by an ending that really doesn't end. I dont really mind it because its cool to have just a really long story so that the fans can get a better feel for it, but as always there are those people who didn't like it. So it could just be what you prefer. The visuals in the movie were awesome. Davy Jones and his crew looked really well detailed and didn't look too fake. I like how they made Jones a pirate but not human, it allows them to have a crazy villan without letting them being the same old human.
In the end, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is worth the money if you are in to fun, action movies that are little cheesy but manage to stay fun. I'm not going to compare it to the first one because I am reviewing this movie, not comparing it to others. So as a stand alone movie, it is a solid summer movie worth the 8 bucks. It's a movie for the whole family so take the kids, and take the wife. I give this movie an A and am looking forward to the next movie to come out in 2007, 2006 if we are lucky.
