Quick review: The Assistant
Quarantine movie #27
This is quietly brilliant. I don’t throw this word around lightly either but this film deserves it. This is clearly the most overlooked film of 2019. No buzz about this movie because I think it’s not loud and in your face. It doesn’t tell you anything and the narrative structure is one of those films that makes it feel way more realistic than most films. Garner is fantastic in the film and another overlooked performance. This would have probably been in my top five if I saw it last year. It’s one of those films that takes brains to actually appreciate it. I’m not hating but a lot of audience reviews are the most idiotic pieces of writing I’ve ever seen. This has a 20% on RT by audiences and they couldn’t be more wrong. Just goes show you how the industry as a whole has become this very bloated loud mess of films because of the sheer hatred this brilliantly fantastic film got from audiences. Does it have a slower narrative and a subdued nature to the film? Absolutely . Does stuff of importance happen in throughout the film though? Absolutely. This film isn’t here to hold your hand and spoon feed the audience into each and every theme, but if you pay attention, the filmmaker gives you all the clues but only if you can stand it. This isn’t for everyone, especially those who can’t pay attention but this is honestly one of the best films I’ve seen in a while. This should be seen and talked about more.
