Seven Songs that Stir the Soul
Someone you Loved, Lewis Capaldi 2018
I first heard the song sometime in 2019, and it grabbed me right away. The lyrics are very intense and can remind one of painful times, or even just bring you to that place of intense feeling. A true heartbreak song with lyrics that speak to the inner core of our emotions and to the soul. It's a tough song, but an amazing one.
"And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved"
Chasing Cars, Snow Patrol 2006
This is a pure and stirring love song, one of the best songs of the 2000s. Sometimes songs mark a time and place in your memories and this one does that. A beautiful September night seeing Snow Patrol perform this live (opening for U2) in 2009 was where I enjoyed this song at its finest moment.
"If I lay here, if i just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world"
Somewhere Only We Know, Keane 2004
This song is grand, moving and was a big hit for the band Keane. The album takes me back to that time as well, realizing now it was a simpler time with a different kind of hope. The song inspires, and it touches the heart. The vocals are intense, the connection is deep. I'll always love this track.
"Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old, and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired, and I need somewhere to begin"
Truly Madly Deeply, Savage Garden 1997
This #1 smash from Savage Garden is a positive and pure song filled with love and adoration. Lyrics full of ideal moments of love and intention of exploring love to the fullest. Maybe the words are idealistic and it is romantic overload, but there is a beauty in the lyrics and the song has always been very moving to me.
"I wanna stand with you on a mountain, I wanna bathe with you in the sea, I wanna lay like this forever, until the sky falls down on me"
Come Undone, Duran Duran 1993
An atmospheric and timeless song. Cool, mellow and beautiful. There is a sadness to it but it feels like you are connected, that you aren't alone in your unraveling.
"Who do you need, who do you love when you come undone"
Waiting for that Day, George Michael 1990
One of my favorites from George Michael, though it didn't have much chart success.
A laid back sound but with lyrics of reflection, longing and hope; of trying to move on but ultimately persuading the lost love to return..
"Come back to me darling, I will make it worth your while, come back to your baby I miss your kiss, I miss your smile"
In Too Deep, Genesis 1986
It's a heartbreaking song with a beautiful soft melody. About a broken love, one that must be left behind. So many moving lyrics, the amazing voice of Phil Collins.
"I know you're going, I can't believe it's the way that your leaving, it's like we never knew each other at all"
"Listen listen to me, I can feel your eyes go through me"
