In Latin America, a mestiza is a woman of mixed American Indian and European ancestry, but in the Philippines, the word mestiza has a loose or a more general meaning. A mestiza refers to a woman of mixed native and foreign ancestry. A native Filipina with any foreign blood, whether Asian, American, European, African, or whether Australian, is called a mestiza.

There are several reasons why the Philippines have so many Filipina mestizas.

The Philippines had been occupied by people of different nationalities. Before Spain colonized the Philippines in 1521, the Chinese were already immigrating into the Philippines as traders. Many Filipinos also prefer to work abroad as OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) because of the higher paychecks. The Filipinos are everywhere. They're in the U.S., they're in China, they're in Saudi Arabia, they're in France, they're in Russia, they're in Iraq, they're in Afghanistan, they're in everywhere, across the globe. This, of course, increases social interaction with other races and eventually increases inter-racial union.
