Psychosexual film with a sudden, perversive twist
A seemingly "fragile bird," innocent girl-next-door sets up an unwitting psychiatrist. Who is innocent and who is the victim, is the question throughout most of this film. Nominally about the drug ("meds") industry feeding the need to fight off depression, this is a somewhat disguised Film Noir involving sex, violence, crime and money grubbing. Hmm, so far sounds like Les Mis without the singing, right?
We were so drawn into it that we had to stay and watch it a second time. It didn't loose its punch, even when we knew what would happen next.
I look for three things in a film: it needs to draw me in, teach me something, and keep me guessing. Side Effects does all three. Go see it!
