Stump Your Friends With Fun & Frantic Classic Cartoon Trivia
Like most children, I loved watching cartoons and as a kid, I would race home to watch my beloved favorites after school. My big brother was also a fan and we'd try to outsmart each other with clever questions and answers about our favorite characters.
So this is dedicated to my older sibling who kept me on my toes when playing our favorite game. For all those Saturday mornings with cereal and weekday afternoons, with our afternoon snack, here are some of our favorite cartoon trivia points.
Nieces & Nephews
For some reason, many of our favorite cartoon characters were unmarried but this didn't stop animators from giving us tiny versions of them as nieces and nephews. In the case of Woody Woodpecker, he had Knothole and Splinter as his nephew and niece respectively.
As a couple, Popeye and Olive Oyl were officially wed in a 1939 Fleischer Studio theatrical short, but it was never revealed if Swee'Pea was their legitimate offspring. In the form of a miny me times four, Popeye was gifted with a set of identical, quadruplet nephews named Pipeye, Peepeye, Poopeye and Pupeye.
In case you're wondering, the name of Popeye's mysterious little pet was Eugene the Jeep. It was also never revealed what a "Jeep" actually was but it did have magical powers and was a friend to all.
Fun With Elmer Fudd
One of Mel Blanc's most recognizable voice-overs, this bumbling hunter was originally named and seen in "Egghead Rides Again." circa 1937. Except in comics, Elmer is rarely seen onscreen without his iconic cap so we may have never known of his shiny dome.
In the award-winning "What's Opera Doc," Elmer dons a horned helmet and armed with a spear, he hunts a pigtailed, dancing Bugs Bunny while singing the aria "Kill Da Wabbit." While many people believe this was based on the opera Marriage of Figaro, it was actually penned after Ring of the Nibelung.
Master Sergeant Bugs Bunny
Bugs is synonymous with Bunny, but his first name is actually a reference to him being crazy instead of just a pesky, "wascally wabbit" as Elmer often called him. Speaking of fame, Bugs is among only a handful of animated characters to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the company of:
- Donald Duck
- Mickey and Minnie Mouse
- The Rugrats
- The Simpsons
- Snoopy
- Snow White
- Tinker Bell
- Winnie The Pooh
- Woody Woodpecker
As his popularity grew during World War II, Bugs Bunny was awarded the rank of an honorary Master Sergeant by the US Marine Corp for his performance in Super Rabbit and other connections with the military in his many cartoons.
Hands Off
Have you ever noticed how many animated characters wear gloves? From Disney's Mickey Mouse to Warner Brother's Bugs Bunny. The short answer to this query may be they're just easier to draw this way. Take into account during the early days of black-and-white animation, the white gloves stood out and accentuated their hand movements to make them appear more human. Some say it points to the early days of Vaudeville, so take your pick.
Disney's No Smoking Policy
In 2015, Disney's CEO and chairman Bob Iger banned smoking from all Disney films and by contract there can be no instances of being impaled or beheaded in any scenes. But let's get back to the no smoking policy previously broken in:
- 101 Dalmatians
- Aladdin
- Alice in Wonderland
- Dumbo
- Hercules
- Peter Pan
- Pinocchio
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame
- The Little Mermaid
- The Three Caballeros
Goofy was also seen sporting a cigarette in an animated short that was ironically entitled, "No Smoking."
Disney Ditches Parents
Some of our favorite Disney classic characters were without their beloved mother and this might not have been by mistake. Before we get to this lengthy list, Walt faced the untimely death of his own mother in a very miserable way. After becoming successful during the Great Depression, Walt bought his parents a house and they later realized it had a faulty furnace.
Although a crew from the studio attempted to make repairs on the unit, the fumes still killed his mother and Disney always felt responsible. This may be mirrored in these characters either orphaned, separated or seen without parents in their roles:
- Aladdin
- Alice in Wonderland
- Ariel in The Little Mermaid
- Arthur in Sword and the Stone
- Bambi
- Belle in Beauty and the Beast
- Dumbo
- Elsa and Anna in Frozen
- Kida in Atlantis: The Lost Empire
- Koda in Brother Bear
- Kuzco in The Emperor's New Grove
- Lilo & Stitch
- Linguini in Ratatouille
- Mowgli in The Jungle Book
- Nemo in Finding Nemo
- Oliver in Oliver and Company
- Olivia in The Great Mouse Detective
- Penny in The Rescuers
- Peter Pan and The Lost Boys
- Pocahontas
- Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame
- Rapunzel
- Simba in The Lion King
- Sleeping Beauty
- Snow White
- Tarzan
Let us know in the comments section below if we missed any animated classics where Disney characters were separated from their parents during the majority of the storyline.
Real Names Please
"Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius" is a great title and the pronunciation is meant to be a spin on the pronunciation "wily" and there's one reference to it being Ethelbert in comic book form. Here are a few other names we may not know:
- Peanut's Peppermint Patty is really named Patricia Reichardt
- Scobert "Scooby" Dooby Doo
- His pal Shaggy's real name is Norville Rogers
- Winnie The Pooh is actually named Edward Bear
- Pepe le Pew is constantly chasing after Penelope Pussycat
- Casper the Friendly Ghost's last name is McFadden
- Sebastian the crab in The Little Mermaid's full name is HoracioTheloneous Ignaceous Crustaceous Sebastian
- Bugs girlfriend's name is Lola Bunny
But with the same last name, doesn't that mean they're either married or family members? No word on this connection can be found, only that she is his girlfriend.
