Wow. Okay, now our age difference is becoming apparent. I consider myself pretty well-rounded. But I gotta tell ya. I recognize almost none of these songs. And only a few of the bands.

However, just to show that I'm not a complete old fogey, I second the nominations for The Beautiful People, Block Rockin Beats, and I Will Buy You a New Life. And of course, Tom Petty because I'm set in my ways. Glad to see that you included Alice in Chains, Everclear, Pearl Jam, Eminem, Soundgarden, LL Cool J, and DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.

Angela You Rock! Thank you so much for being the first to read my list and actually leave me a comment. I was starting to get bitter.

Everyone you mentioned had their moments.

It's understandable what you say about age and variety of bands and that's why I'm so fond of the 90s.

Because musically Nirvana detroyed rock as we knew it and gave a new generation their own unfiltered voice.  and simultaneously the F.B.I. had finally gave up the fight (at least publicly) against hip-hop.

There were simply too many dollars to be made from it for it to be ignored.

Run DMC, MC Hammer, Tone Loc, Beastie Boys, all helped hip-hop grow a new limb, but in the 90s, it grew some legs and big big mouth.

Biggie Smalls and 2Pac are too often the symbols of this period because of their mysterious deaths, Cobain too.

Bigger than all of them was that music for a small time 91-95 Music was everywhere and a new voice emerged every second.

Independent films like Clerks, and Do The Right Thing blew the minds of the youth and a whole new generation of filmmakers was born. AND CAME THE MAN

The one.  QUENTIN TARANTINO ARRIVED and forget minds blown, he started a revolution.

Ahh the 90s, such a shame no one else is in on this list.

Ughh. I'm Trying To Find A Song. Back When I Was Really Young. All I Remember Is This Dude Was Playing A Saxaphone And The Guy That Was Actually Singing. But The Weird Thing Is, He Had This Dinosaur Looking Thing There With Him. But It Wasn't A Kid Song. And I Used To Listen To This All The Time. He Had Like, Short Curly Hair. And The Colour Of The Whole Video Was Black And White But It Was Just An Edit. And No It Wasn't Barney The Dinosaur.. It Was Standing On Two Legs :( And I Dont Know Who Knows What I'm Talking About Grrr

DJ Funktual, you're definitely admirable. I've seen nearly all of your videos and i love what you do. Thank you for showing how important samples have been in Hip Hop. This list is incredible, As a huge fan of the 90's, this list is a big help for me. Keep doing your thing. And most importantly, thank you.

Hey there, first off its a great list!! but I need some help finding good protest music from this decade and I was hoping you could help me out!

I am looking for songs by African Americans, which talk about their daily struggle. I am writing an essay which focuses on protest music of the 30s, 60s and 90s... I am connecting each song to the artists life and the general society..

Thanks again for the list, can you please help me pick a meaningful song from it? maybe notorious big or public enemy...

      Thank you

I love your lists! It helps so much when I got music block and tired of my music collection that has been through too many moves from the Mainland/Hawaii. When making a list there is only so much you can put on the list when you are creating it and it depends on your frame of mind or mood that is. Good Job Dude. Mahalo Plenty

I think you know what I am going to say, that you have managed again to overlook one of the most influential, infamous rock bands of all time in Faith No More.

I dont want to hate the list or your work or anything but come on man, there is 10 Pearl Jam songs here, 8 Nirvana songs, 5 Tool songs. As much as I love a lot of this stuff its all top hits kind of stuff, I mean Epic was a hit for Faith No More but not what I would put up there neither.

    • profile image

      Josh Brooks 6 years ago

Uh... Epic was released in the 80's, on The Real Thing album. For a great 90's Faith No More song, Midlife Crisis or Easy.

I just think that the list sucked. I mean there's so notification that Death Metal, Black Metal, Techno or even Gothic Metal or even anything else was ever on here. I mean Death Metal was better than Grunge at most points. I do love the rap songs. But, seriously, the majority of the songs on this list are Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Grunge artists, and among others. Tell me, this list, has a couple of underground artist, but no heavy songs. No thrash metal? Wow, this list sucked. Not even Type O Negative. Not even Dinosaur Jr? Dying Fetus? Entombed? Gorguts? Carcass? Napalm Death? Insane Clown Posse? No Death Metal, Grindcore, no Techno, and among others. None of them. Because, you hate the underground or you've thought the music genre sucked. But, seriously, this list, was okay and nothing more. Nirvana on more than 5 times? Tool more than 4? Pearl Jam 8 times? I've read the list, it had sucked. I would put on a mix of every music from Alternative Rock to West Coast Hip-Hop. Come on, I would give all of them artist, a try. But, the list was lacked. And, to end it, it had lacked any other music genre.

      nice list mate ...

brings me back to lots of the hip hop and grunge I loved in the ninties too ...

to the haters ... any list is always going to be subjective and angled to the shit you like ...

for me I would have included

      'super sharp shooter': ganja cru

      'chaos AD': Sepultura

      'keep movin': Mr scruff

      and probably a bunch by portishead/tricky/stone roses/aphex twin/dj shadow and a bunch of jungle/hardcore tracks ...

but hey ... thats cause I live in the UK :)

still though dude ... no space for any portishead tracks in your top 450 ????? harsh

Ok, so I grew up in the 90s, and though I admit, I listened to a lot of 80s tunes, I was also REALLY big into the music of my time and I recognize about 10% of this list!!! Why is that. About half of those I never heard until I STOPPED listening to the popular stuff, like tool and pearl jam. Before that I had no clue who they were, so if you think this list is a good sum-up of the 90s you are wrong sir!

Quite impressive! This had to of taken awhile to put together, and I appreciate your willingness to both put them in a unique order and include music from many genres.

It is evident that you have both a well defined philosophy/taste and a broad enough familiarity with the period to be taken seriously.

I knew many of the songs & artists and many others through a quick jogging of the memory thanks to a little web searching, yet there were others, maybe 1 out of 10 that I was unfamiliar.

Sorry, but I must criticize this list, because I hardly see any Eurodance and Electro songs.Without those classics, Electro music would not be popular like it is now. There is too much hip hop songs. Since this is the top 450, not 50 or 100, you should at least include 50 of those.

      excellent list, really eclectic.

Would add "stardog champion" by mother love bone(band that had jeff ament and stone gossard prior to them joining pearl jam). Would also add "46 and 2" by tool.

      A few more things-

      Ten Crack Commandments- Notorious B.I.G.

How I could just kill a man- RATM (cypress hill cover)

      River of Deceit- Mad Season

      Mudshovel- Staind

      Shade- Silverchair

      Pretend We're Dead- L7

Do for Love- 2pac (posthumous album)

Honestly though, it's a really good list anyway.

ok, some really great songs on your compilation. I would agree with many of them, but you've got to include some of the top pop songs like I Want It That Way/Back Street Boys and Britneys 'One More Time. These were monster hits. There were/are a lot of closet Pop fans. Enjoyed reading through your list.

Oh my god. I'm trying to remember a song that came out right around the time of that "Put a little birdhouse in your soul" song. It wasn't as popular, but there was certainly a bit of airplay and it had a video. In it, three band members are dancing next to each other. All of them have black & white faces of political figures superimposed over their own faces. The song had a bit of a dark sort of edge to it. I've looked at all of your list, but didn't see anything familiar in that vein (I also didn't see that MC 900Ft Jesus song, but maybe it just wasn't poular enough to have made the list). Anything anyone can do to help would be appreciated. Cheers.

2 Pac "Dear Momma" and "Tell my how you want it" belong HIGH up on that list if you're gonna have gangsta in it at all! Agree with "Mind Playing Tricks" by the Geto Boyz. Dam it feels good to be a gangsta and "not down with bein broke" by them are great too. SHAKESPEARE coulda written MPT-its MacBethian! "Reminisce by Troy and CL Smooth belongs high up too. Great Rap funeral song. WHERE is Alanis Morissette on that list if you're going to have alternarock/grunge?? Sell out or NOT "you oughtta know" is GENIUS!"Big Poppa Butt" by BIG or as I erroneously referred to it "Big Octopus" is better than "Juicy." Heck "Ten rules of crack" are better if you gonna have him in there at all. Courtney Love and "Hole" deserve a mention as does "Verucca Salt". "Never Never Land" by Metallica was GREAT! EMINEM and "Slim Shady" is left out?? WTF And "Stan" while it gets little airplay even on Sirius XM is GREAT! The rap equivalent of "Dark Side of the Moon" REM and U2 were the greatest lyricists of the Eighties and Nineties. Where are Red Hot Chili Peppers if you're going to put in drek like blues travelers and the Black Crowes?no SmashMouth no Sugar Ray?? I

I am a classic rock fan of the sixties and seventies but admit there was Some talent in the previous two decades more so than the pop tart boy band and hair metal Eighties. You NEED new genres for the record companies to survive! is there anything worthile coming down the pike b/c Linkin Park and Korn just aint gonna cut it. Ditto for Gaga

Kudos to the hardcore critics who actually counted how many songs there were from certain artists... lol, DJ Funktual you could have avoided all the drama by changing the title to "MY 450 Best Songs of the 90's" but then what would be the fun in that?

How y'all gonna make a stupid list like this without adding Mariah Carey or Destiny's Child to the list, vh1 100 greatest songs of the 90's list is wayyy more better than this wack stupid Dumb 90's, atleast vh1 100 greatest songs of the 90's list had Mariah Carey and Destiny's Child on that list.

Okay Eduardo, you commented the same thing 3 weeks ago. Maybe you are thinking about this list a bit too much. You are talking about pop music which lacks substance. I haven't heard a song by Mariah that I liked yet and Destiny's Child same thing. If you like the VH-1 list better fine, why do you care about My list?

I really enjoy your lists. Gives me something to root through when I find the time to do so. I like the variety in this one and a lot of it's new to me because I was only a small child when a lot of this music came out. Also, I think it's funny that people fail to realize that this is a personal list and then get offended when their favorite song isn't included. As someone who continually looks for good music, I thank you for list.
