The Best Original Motion Picture Soundtracks

Updated on March 21, 2015

The List

Original movie soundtracks can add an incredible depth and dimension to bland films and make otherwise spectacular films seem transcendent.

Off the top of my head I came up with a list of soundtracks that stood out in my mind long after I had seen the accompanying movie. This is, therefore, by no means an all-inclusive list. I'll probably think of others the moment I publish this.

Also, the list is in no order -- I couldn't manage that.

There were a number of films I considered, but dismissed because only their main theme was impressive. I wanted to compile a list of films where the soundtracks played a significant part in the entire motion picture.

I did not include films like "2001" or "Clockwork Orange" because the soundtracks were mostly taken or derived from well-known (or lesser known) classics. For the same reason I did not include films like "Phantom of the Opera" because the scores were not written exclusively for the screen.

So, this is what leaked out of my immediate consciousness:

Great list. Butch Cassidy would be my #1. Patton's score excellent too. Voted up and shared.
