One Bright Sunday Morning
Near the Frisco Bay
A cry could be heard.
Tommy Paige was born that day.
His mother was beside him
His father filled with pride;
And they lay beside him
The good book at his side.
It had a PLAIN BLACK COVER
And was tattered and worn.
Tommy loved that good book
From the day he was born.
It had a PLAIN BLACK COVER
Words from heaven above;
And written on the inside,
“From Mother with love.”
Twenty years thereafter
Tommy chose a young bride.
Wedding bells were ringing,
His book was at his side.
They walked down the aisle
Where everyone could see.
The preacher took the book
And he began to read.
*
Chorus
*
Many years thereafter
Tommy Paige had passed away.
In his hands they placed his book
As they lowered him to his grave.
The preacher bowed his head
And together they prayed;
A little congregation
Where little Tommy laid.
It had a PLAIN BLACK COVER
And was tattered and worn.
Tommy loved that good book
From the day he was born.
It had a PLAIN BLACK COVER
Words from heaven above;
And written on the inside,
“From Mother, with love…
And written on the inside,
“From Mother, with love.”

I wrote this tune in 1985, and over the years, enjoyed performing it many times. If anything, it demonstrates how an entire lifetime can be summed up in three verses and a chorus. Let’s hope Tommy died happy. I suspect so.
Thanks for stopping in for a moment of diversion.
Big Jim, Arch’, and Tiny have discovered a major writing talent here at the HUB. Use this link to read some hilarious stuff by Anita Sue and then leave comments after you recover from laughing.
Tiny says, “Thee out’a make BIG MONEY, Mr. Jay!” Maybe more than mow’n lawnth!”
You will see a natural beautiful flow to her thoughts that approaches artistic perfection.
Big Jim says, “Check it out!”

A Passing Stranger CD ( and 33 1/3 rpm) is now available. It is the encouragement from HUBBERS that brought this about.

I absolutely love the song and can hear the music in my head. You've got soul my friend! Blessed message here.
That is a catchy little tune.
I have a black bible as well! Nice Hub, beautiful story!
Great hub, beautiful message. I've got an old black Bible like the one pictured. It was my gramdmother's and it's dated 1936. I don't read it. I've gotten used to the new stuff over the years. I just look at it. Occasionaly, I refer to it when the other is too vanila in a certain area.
Man, I love your style. I'm an old guitar slamming, singing, song writer myself. It's odd, what I write and love is completely different than what I love and listen to. Not even close.
Old Poolman, a friend and neighbor sent me over. I'm real picky about who I follow, and I'm glad he did.

Hi,I loved this short story and how it was turned into a song. I like how this guy had something so special from an infant,All the way through his life. Also when he died,It was in his hands to. The song was great to, You did a great job. I also like how this short story is very special and positive and beautiful. The passage that was on the cover and inside to, was great loving words. You have a great voice by the way to. I wanted to ask,I was curious,Was this guy a cowboy or an actor,Was he famous?
Beautiful sentiment beautifully conveyed.

Yes, RJ, I did get a black bible as a child for a birthday present November 24, 1963, unfortunately because of the immediate national tragedy I did not get much else.
Ray: As a matter of fact I do have a black bible I own. Thanks for this hub and i loved the song.
RJ, your music and your lyrics have such heart and soul. You are an awesome song writer.
I came into this world too late to be a part of the 50s and was too young for the 60s but I learned quickly what I loved and didn't love about music. I love a variety of music from good ole'rock and roll to country to a lot of different things in between. Love the words to your song because I can understand them and I really like it.I love music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s they lost me in the 90s and left me behind in the dust when the 21st century arrived. I keep to the music I enjoy. Lookin forward to more songs.
My ex-father-in-law had a family bible, it was a huge book about 300 years old and was always passed down to the eldest son and each wrote their name in it
The reason I got interested in folk songs back in the old days of the 1950's was that I got caught up in how a ballad could tell a story in a few verses. However, I did discover the attention span of a younger generation couldn't handle some of those.Yours is short enough,I believe.
It is very inspirational and lovely RJ. I am so glad I stopped by to read and listen to this. Hyph
ps-When my grandson was born, I bought him a family Bible so he would always have a start on recording that family tree.
Very lovely inspirational song RJ, I like it a lot!
Ray, most excellent hub and song, dust
