The Downf Fall of Jerry Sandusky

Updated on April 16, 2012

Every morning before I have my first cup of coffee, I always turn on the news. I was shocked and sick to my stomach; too hear the news of Jerry Sandusky, (former football coach for Penn State), that he had been arrested on sexual child abuse charges, over 40 to be exact, that took place over a 15 year period of time. These devastating allegations have rattled and entire community and the world. Sandusky’s career was manly under Head Coach Joe Paterno. Gerald Arthur “Jerry” Sandusky was born on January 26/1944 in Washington, Pennsylvania. He was one of the most well-known assistant’s coaches of all time. However, he never held a Head Coaching position, during his career. In 1986 and 1999 he received Assistant coach of the year awards.

After Sandusky’s retirement he hosted many summer football camps and was very active in the Second Mile group which he founded in 1977 in Pennsylvania. Former President George W. Bush praised the Second Mile group for their work and involvement with children in 1990 in a letter. He called the group a “shining example” of charity work. Senator Rick Sanatorium also honored the Second Mile group with an Angels of Adoption Award in 2002. Little did anyone know that Sandusky was presumed to be abusing young boys? The Second Mile Group is claimed to of been a group that Sandusky used in which he targeted young boys and gained their trust. If these allegations ring to be true, this is a sad time in America, when it shows our young children, that those in Leadership positions, sometimes just can’t be trusted.

When a grown man is showering naked with young boys, than this is definitely wrong, or at least in my eyes and I hope in yours as well. If this were his children, would he want a grown naked man showering with them? My answer would be, no that he would not. This man is presumed innocent until he is proven guilty, however, the allegations and the evidence keeps mounting against him. More and more victims are coming forth now and the college has encouraged that as well as the Governor.

On November 4/11 a grand jury indicted Sandusky on 40 charges of child abuse. At least 20 of the incidents took place while Sandusky was an Assistant Football Coach at Penn State. This comes after a 3 year investigation. November 5/11 Sandusky was arrested and charged with seven counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse; eight counts of corruption of minors, eight counts of endangering the welfare of a child, seven counts of indecent assault along with other offences as well. Tim Curley former athletic director along with Gary Shultz senior vice president of business and finance for Penn State were also brought up on charges of perjury, when they did nothing about the allegations of child abuse by Sandusky.

In 2002 Assistant Coach Mike McQueary than a Penn State graduate student, reported to Joe Paterno that he had seen Sandusky raping a child in the shower. Joe Paterno reported it to Tim Curley, Curley told Sandusky not to bring any of the boys from the Second Mile Group to the football building; this was also approved by Shultz and school president Graham Spanier. The grand jury’s indictment accuses Curley and Shultz of not telling the police and about lying that McQueary never told them about the alleged abuse.

Sandusky is free on a $100,000 bond pending his trial. My heart goes out to all the families involved in this tragedy.

Very good! I wrote about Joe P's involvement in this before he passed away.

This was unbelievable and I am sure he is going away for the rest of his life!

Excellent hub and well-written! You give a great chronology of what has happened in this case, down to the specific charges against Sandusky You have done your homework very well and maintained great objectivity.

It is a sad day in America, when we cannot trust our athletic coaches. The time frame this all happened in is incredible and so many in a position to do something did nothing.
