The Pineapple Awards 2017 Q1

Updated on August 8, 2017

The Pineapple Awards was designed, to acknowledge good filmmaking. Updated quarterly.

What’s The Pineapple Awards?

It’s for some of the films debuting in theatres. Much as I’d like to study each film in detail, there are too many films being released worldwide. On average, there is one film per day. And that’s on a slow week. In busy season, there are 2 or 3 released everyday. Rather than concentrating on one genre (because that in itself is limiting!), I choose to study the broadband of film.

The ranking is given in Pineapple Points, which is different than the Rotten Tomatoes scoring system. Tomatoes do go bad faster than pineapples, guys. Pineapple Points’ scale is:

1 pineapple = Needs more stimulation!
2 pineapples = Good, but here are some suggestions to the filmmakers.
3 pineapples = Pretty good. Wise use of the Studio’s money. Donating my DVD copy to the Library.
4 pineapples = Great film, will see it again. And again. Might donate my copy to the Library. A MovieNotez.
5 pineapples = Vault worthy. Meaning my DVD or BluRay copy will be in my vault, and not someone else’s vault.

Another reason for creating the Pineapple Awards is to acknowledge the film industry, from a Movie Fan’s POV. Also moonlighting as a Theatre Auditor, while cruising in and out of various theatres, there are random bits about films and filmmaking echoing in the back of my mind.

Trailer Chex – a New Column

Please check out my Trailer Chex column, for recommendations on which theatre to view each new Feature film. In the short-length of time in between feature films, there’s not enough time to research each film individually and write a highly engaging Hub for y’all.

MovieNotez – an entirely new way to analyze films

For the Movie Buff in all of us, you might want to check out MovieNotez, where I describe the entire film in detail. If it’s a classic film, such as the Alien Quadrilogy, I’ll either have purchased or downloaded the script legitimately. I then mark up my copy of the versioned script, notes in the margins, and scribbled around the Sluglines and Dialogue. That is why scripts are printed single-sided, on the right side of the page. That leaves the left side for notes, by anyone in the Production Unit or the Director or Producers.

MovieNotez is more from a film student’s POV. This answers the burning Qs from my SM followers. I also interview and learn from online classes with Industry Professionals, and include content in all my Hubs.

Ultimately, it’s Film Homework! (and how fun is that?)

If you know me…

As my instructor Jason R. has a thing for Dinosaurs, well, I have thing for…you guessed it, Pineapples!

You’ll now know how to spot me in the CyberCafe-Hub-CoffeeShop by the pineapple battery pack. Yes, I bought one from pals at www.Buqu.com. My Classic Pineapple still smells uniquely like…well, Pineapple. Adding a nice fragrance to your desktop, as well as being decorative, while on-the-go. (no Blue Pineapples here, because that is an alcoholic drink)

Btw, I gave up creamer in my coffee (no lumpy surprises in the Frig & less weight gain). Now, I just drink it straight. Always a great rush, when drinking a Hot Venti Reserve Cup o’Joe. Fave flavor of the week is a toss-up between Shakiso (Ethiopian) and Jamaican Blue Mountain. If Kona 100 is available, this Starbucks blend trumps all others; okay, maybe a close 2nd with the non-disco’d Kopelani blend. Truly an intravenous experience. After the first Venti, I re-use the cup and order a Refill, based on what’s “On Urn.” Each café location brews their own Urn flavors, so regular Sumatra or Narinda, so long as it’s Dark Roast.

just like Dominic Toretto’s line: “You can have a beer, so long as it’s a Corona.”

February 2017 Pineapple Awardees

This month was a combination of January and February’s films. The Movie Board was re-shuffled, as some of the December 2016 releases were pushed back, to accommodate those filmmakers having an Oscar nomination for the 2018 Academy Awards. Having personally seen 10 films this month, here are their Pineapple Points…

Live by Night
Read the novel by Dennis Lehane, who also wrote Mystic River, which was made into the movie. Remember that one?
3

Hidden Figures
Based on the novel of the same name, except the novel has 4 women, where the Movie has only 3 women as main characters.
2
27-Jan
The Founder
Based on Ray Kroc's version of the McDonalds restaurant story. Filmmakers might want to do more research on their story, as I felt this one was one-sided (like telling the story from Ray's POV). Proving that Michael Keaton can also play the Bad Guy role quite well. Which will be seen later this summer in Spiderman: Homecoming.

27-Jan
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
Opening Day @ 16-plex. Milla and the gang deliver the RE formula again, meanwhile the entire shell around the Umbrella Corporation is explained. And you thought the Bad Guys disappeared forever?

Fifty Shades Darker
Ana & Christian re-deliver their brand of magic. Stay tuned for Fifty Shades Freed in February 2018.
