The Secret Admirer - A Romantic Misunderstanding
Our Love Needed a Spark
Lisa and I had been dating for several years and the love was true. However things were losing their spark. We had lost the romance that brought us together in the first place and Lisa had been feeling a little down. You could say that she was not feeling so desirable of late.
This situation called for a superhero. Enter Mr. Romance with a plan for action. I thought long and hard about the situation and came up with a sure-fire way to bring back the romance that had been missing in our relationship.
Lisa worked the night shift at a local restaurant and I decided to surprise her with a sweet little spontaneous romance. I would purchase a single red rose and a card. I would write a short note inside the card, saying that I had been watching her for awhile and could no longer hide my love. I asked her to meet me at a nearby pizza place after her shift was over and signed it "Your Secret Admirer".
I then stopped by at her place of employment and left the card and the rose under the wiper blade on her car windshield. I then waited for the designated time and proceeded to the pizza parlor, got a table and placed the order. There was no possible way this plan could fail.
Eating Pizza Alone
So there I was, sitting alone in the pizza parlor. A pepperoni pizza and two cold coca-colas in front of me. The time to meet had come and gone, but certainly she had simply had to work a little later than usual. I knew she would show up with a smile on her face.
So I waited. The minutes kept ticking past, then a half hour, an hour. Surely Lisa was on her way. The waitress kept asking if everything was ok with the meal. "Everything is perfect" I replied, tempted to add that the only thing missing was my date.
I should mention that the pizza was quite tasty. I had my fill and the waitress seemed quite sympathetic to my plight. After I packed the leftovers into a take home container and paid for the meal, I headed out the door wondering how my great plan went so wrong.
The Days Pass Slowly
The next day I was still perplexed. My valiant attempt at romance surely did not go unnoticed. Yet she made no mention of the whole ordeal. I thought perhaps she had a rough night at work and would thank me for my efforts before asking for a raincheck. Yet I heard nothing.
As much as I thought about the whole thing, I simply could not understand why Lisa had made no mention of the whole thing. Did she realize that I spent nearly two hours alone in the restaurant waiting for her?
I asked her friends if she had mentioned the rose and card, they had not heard anything of it. It seemed that I was the only one aware of my romantic gesture. It seemed our hero Mr. Romance had met his match.
Mr. Romance Becomes Mr. Jerk
After about a week and still no mention of my great romantic deed, Lisa tells me that she needs to talk to me. Now any man is aware that when a woman begins a conversation with "I need to tell you something", there is bad news to follow.
I am on defense now, plead insanity. I was not aware of my wrong doing and the story being told is totally untrue. I was busy helping little old ladies carry their groceries out to their cars. People are spreading lies about me.
So Lisa reaches into her purse, pulls out a card and wilted rose. Looks me straight in the eye and says that she has no idea who left them on her car. Now I have an explanation and a choice.
I thought about how she had been feeling undesirable lately and if I played along as if I had nothing to do with the card then it would make her feel better about herself. After all, who does not enjoy being desired?
I told her that she must have some idea who left them on her car and she swore that she had no clue. Then she proceeded to tell me that she had not been flirting with anyone.
I told her not to worry about it, that we would let it go and see what happened. It would give her confidence knowing that somebody found here attractive and would boost her confidence. I was doing the right thing.
A Friend Armed with Kryptonite
A few days pass and Lisa is feeling better about herself, until she talks with her friend. One of the friends that I had inquired about whether or not Lisa had mentioned the card and rose. The friend told her I was the secret admirer.
Now this whole ordeal still could have ended well, but it didn't. When I next saw Lisa, she had the meanest look I had ever seen. If I remember correctly, there were flames coming from her nostrils.
It seems Lisa thought this was a trick, that I was trying to find out whether or not she would meet up with another guy. In my wildest imagination I could have never thought up such a plan. I never doubted her faithfullness, but I don't think she ever believed that.
Needless to say, Mr.Romance got to sleep alone for awhile. It goes to show that even the best of intentions can go horribly wrong.
