The best fantasy movies ever!

Updated on October 31, 2014

Whether far, far, away, or here on Earth a great story and fictional characters are very popular in America!

The best stories from a strange land called Hollywood.

Fantasy is a genre that is sometimes cast to the outside of the mainstream. It is not Sci-Fi or horror, but instead the movie hinges on the uniqueness of the characters and the story. Talking animals, Kings and Queens from an imaginary land, swords, spells, and happy ending make some fantasy films a must see.

Who did I hate to leave out?

The Chronicles of Narnia- I liked how they handled Aslan and many of the other mythical Creatures.

I also liked Enchanted, with James Marsden, and Amy Adams

My list of the 13 best!

13. Legend- Actually there is an extra because number 13 is a tie.Tim Curry plays a devil named Lord of Darkness, who plans to end daylight forever. Well, he has to get through Tom Cuise first, and then marry a special woman. Why is stopping a wedding and saving the world hand in hand in so many movies?

13. Dragonheart- No, Smaug is not the only one of his kind to star in a movie on my list! Draco, a dragon and several brave humans stand up against tyranny. This was an interesting story about heart and the will to rise up. This is one of Dennis Quaid's best!

12. Labyrinth- David Bowie plays the Goblin King and sends Jennifer Connoly on a quest. Well, it is a fantasy, so there had to be a quest! I like the unique storyline and cast of characters.

11. Willow- A brave dwarf takes on a quest to protect a special baby from an evil queen's plot. Will Val Kilmer's help be enough to overcome the power of evil and magic? This is a great classic that has been forgotten.

The terrific ten.

10. Excalibur- Merlin the Wizard and King Arthur try to unite forces around the round table. But of course, someone is there to stop that! Helen Mirren was a good surprise in this.

9. The Princess Bride- Robin Wright, in her second best role, brings to life a tale of a princess in danger. Though I liked the cast, it could have been a little better. The story was great however, and is the favorite of many married women. Albinos and giants and princes, oh my!
8. Beast master-The evil leader of a cult (Mayox-Rip Torn) is banished by the King. Mayox's revenge was to have one of his witches cast a spell on the pregnant queen. This spell transferred the baby to an animal so they could sacrifice it easily. There was a problem. Dar, the baby survived and was born with a special power. This power would be used to save a kingdom!

7. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire- What can be said about Harry Potter? This series of books and movies are extremely popular and will probably continue coming for eternity!

6. The return of the King- Peter Jackson did an amazing job on this. This first was quite flawed but they got better as the episodes came out. The cast was as close to perfect as they come and the story development was impressive too.

Five Fantasies that rise above!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows 2 - Intense and a huge battle between good and evil ensues. All of Harry's power and fortitude will be tested. Are you afraid to see who wins?

-Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Willy Wonka)- The original was the best by far! Gene Wilder was perfect for this role and the wild twists and turns were compelling! I loved the story line and how everything transpired.

The desolation of Smaug- This was Peter Jackson's best, which is saying a lot! His adaptation of this powerful best was award worthy. I also liked the acting, the music and the scenery, of course!

Wizard of OZ- What can be said about the Wonderful World of OZ. This was as good as any adaptation from a book. The cast and music were perfect also! This could not have been easy to bring the Baum book to the big screen.

Here it is. The undisputed Champion!

Star Wars- Not Sci-Fi, but fantasy. Star Wars brought to life many odd creatures, a family, and a fight for freedom like no galaxy has ever seen!
