The Genius of Carlos Mencía ~ He might make you laugh until you need a bucket of cold water to stop.
With the recent contraversies, both of allegations of Carlos Mencía borrowing jokes, and, in my opinion, a more serious one, that of Imus's racial slurs, it may seem untimely to bring praise to a comedian who makes a staple of ethnic humor. I will have to delve into the former, and sort things out for myself before making any pronouncements. As far at the latter, Carlos Mencía starts out laughing at himself. From there, he spares no one in the name of satire. Is this ok? I don't know. Do I sometimes feel guilty when I'm laughing at his humor? Honestly, sometimes I do. Do I think he's being mean-spirited? Not at all. I think in a way, he is like a homeopath. What I mean is, his humor is like medicine, feeding the patient a strain of the disease itself in order to jump start the immune system so that the body can heal itself. Being multi-ethnic and a woman myself, I am very sensitive to political correctness in my dealings with people and I am the first to feel insulted when someone's insensitivity targets one of my nationalities or my gender... but what can I say? I saw Carlos Mencía in concert and when he stripped down to his underwear and got bawdy at the end of the show to squeeze out one more laugh... what can I say that could be funnier than that?
