Top 10 Most Anticipated August Releases
Before We Get Started
For this list, I have chosen 10 movies in which I am most excited for in the coming month of August. These movies are not in order of level of excitement, but in order of release dates.
If you have a movie that you think should have made the list, or if you agree with my list, leave me a comment down below and tell me what you think. With that being said, let's jump right into the list.
#1. 'Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw'
Release Date: August 2nd, 2019
'Hobbs & Shaw' stars Dwayne Johnson as the ex-cop, Hobbs, and Jason Statham as the anti-hero outcast. This film is directed by David Leitch, who was the director of 'Deadpool 2'. Idris Elba is also in this movie as the bad guy, Brixton. The two heroes will team up to take down Elba's Brixton.
Now, I am split down the middle on this film. On one hand, it looks like a damn good time! It has the humor, chemistry and action. It will have over the top, summer block-buster action that will be a joy to watch on the big screen. On the other hand, this is not a fast and furious movie. Where are the street races? Where is the team? And for God's sake, why does the bad guy have super powers? Why couldn't they just make this movie and changed the names of Hobbs and Shaw. They should not be associating this film with the fast and furious franchise. However, like I said, it does look like a throwback action movie so I am excited to see what's in store.
#2. 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark'
Release Date: August 9th, 2019
'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark' is directed by André Øvredal , who directed the underrated horror movie, 'The Autopsy of Jane Doe'. The master of creepy designs, Guillermo del Toro, serves as one of the producers on this film. With these two minds working together, this could turn out to be a really good movie!
If the trailers tell you anything, it looks terrifying. The idea of the movies is about a book with a bunch of scary stories that come to life when read. The stories that are in the book sound so eerie, and the monsters in the film look so scary and unique that it just looks creepy.
#3. 'The Peanut Butter Falcon'
Release Date: August 9th, 2019
'The Peanut Butter Falcon' comes from two first time directors, Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz. Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson star in this heart-warming tale of a boy with down-syndrome who wants to pursue his dream of being a wrestler and runs away from home. Along the way he finds LaBeouf's character, and an unlikely bond forms.
This movie looks sweeter than sugar! It will bring the audience to tears, I already know that because even the trailer does that job. It looks like there will be great performances all the way around. I do not want to miss this one! It will be a feel good movie that will have you cheering towards the end, my guarantee.
#4. 'The Kitchen'
Release Date: August 9th, 2019
'The Kitchen' is directed by first time director, Andrea Berloff. Though this is her first time in the director's chair, she has many writing credits under her belt. This film stars Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss, and Tiffany Haddish. With the combination of these three strong women, this movie has the possibility of being great.
This film just has my interest up. I do not want to expect this film to fail, because I would like to see a strong powerhouse female movie all about crime. I would like to see these women be complete bad asses. My hopes are high for this film, please don't let me down!
#5. 'The Art of Racing in the Rain'
Release Date: August 9th, 2019
'The Art of Racing in the Rain' is directed by Simon Curtis who previously directed 'Goodbye Christopher Robin'. Another movie that looks to be a feel good film, stars Milo Ventimiglia, Amanda Seyfried, and Kevin Costner, lending his voice to the dog, Enzo. The story follows the story of a formula one driver and his bond with his golden retriever. Along the way the dog gets to experience the racing life and learns a lot about life, in general, along the way.
This film has been done before. It is not all that original. However, I am intrigued. I am excited to see how the dog experiences the thrill of racing. I want to see how racing from a different perspective and I think this could be quite interesting. I am a sucker for these types of movies, as I am an animal lover. I also quite enjoy a feel good movie that is lighthearted.
#6. 'The Angry Birds Movie 2'
Release Date: August 14th, 2019
'The Angry Birds Movie 2' stars Jason Sudeikis, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, among many others. The film has a different director as the first, Thurop Van Orman, so I am excited to see what he brings to the table. This film follows the Angry Birds as they team up with the pigs to take down the Mighty Eagle.
I am excited for this movie, as I very much enjoyed the first one. I love a fun animated movie that makes me feel like a kid again. And if the trailers promise anything, that is exactly what this movie will be. It is going to be one of them movies that you just enjoy as you would have when you were a child. It will have that child-like humor and probably deliver a good message along with it.
#7. 'Good Boys'
Release Date: August 16th, 2019
'Good Boys' is directed by Gene Stupnitsky, who directed a few episodes of 'The Office'. This film stars one of my favorite child actors, Jacob Tremblay. It is about three boys who just want to be popular, they ditch school and end up with a bag full of drugs which leads them along on an adventure together to make it to a party.
This film looks like the child version of 'Superbad' while still keeping that raunchy theme, even though it is centered around a group of 6th grade boys. 'Superbad' is my all time favorite comedy, you can imagine that am excited fr this one. It will have a ton of laughs and will be a good movie to watch with a group of friends.
#8. 'Blinded by the Light'
Release Date: August 14th, 2019
'Blinded by the Light' follows a high school kid as he discovers the music of Bruce Springsteen and begins to relate with his lyrics. The director and actors are not well known- none of them are A-list Hollywood actors.. So, we have a list of newcomers ready to deliver an amazing movie. I love to see fresh faces in a movie.
This film just looks amazing. It reminds me of how 'Baby Driver' incorporated the lyrics of the music into the movie, this film looks to do the same thing. In the trailer, the lyrics show up on walls as the character listens to it. I am excited to see how they relate the music of Bruce Springsteen to this high school kid trying to find his way in life.
#9. 'Brittany Runs a Marathon'
Release Date: August 23rd, 2019
'Brittany Runs a Marathon' is written and directed by Paul Downs Colaizzo. This film stars Jillian Bell as Brittany. The movie follows Brittany as she gets her life under control by training for a marathon.
This movie looks like, yet another, feel good movie about setting goals and making a change. I can tell this movie will have an important story and have something to say. I am a total believer in fitness and living a healthy life. That being said, I am all in for this one!
#10. 'Freaks'
Release Date: August 23rd, 2019
'Freaks' stars Emile Hirsch as a paranoid father of a young girl. He keeps her locked in the house from the outside world, fearing what might be lurking outside. The two directors have not done anything in the past to really excite my interest. The trailer is what gets me ready to see this film.
I am excited for the mystery. It looks to have the same atmospheric paranoia that '10 Cloverfield Lane' had in it. Even the trailer really makes no sense. It has so many elements of mystery science fiction that has me ready to watch and find out just what the hell is going on.
Thank You For Reading
That is my list on the top 10 most anticipated movies of August. Looks as if most of the movies will make you feel good and laugh, but there are a few darker, creepier ones too. I'm sure, as with most films, some of these may not live up to my expectations. However, I am thrilled that there is a good list of movies making their debut, and I am excited to see what the filmmakers of these movies will deliver to us.
