Matilda
This 1996 classic features Mara Wilson as Matilda, alongside Danny Devito as Mr.Wormwood and Embeth Davidtz as Ms. Honey. Matilda finds herself trapped in the TV dinners and her fathers crook of a car dealership at home. Signing for packages, missing out on school, the young girl grows frustrated with her situation and seeks comfort in her local library. Yet, this is not enough for Matilda, and she discovers that she is not like other girls her age. Her anger has sparked a kind of magic and before she knows it, Matilda is sending books zooming across the room.
This is not the only fortunate advent in her life - her father soon decides to send her to school after meeting her brute of a principal Trunchball, played by Pam Ferris. Matilda embarks on a new adventure at school with not only the nightmare Trunchball but with her angelic teacher, Ms. Honey who takes Matilda under her wing. The movie focuses on the dynamic between Matilda's family and the relationship between her school teacher and her school principal. Truly heartwarming and sweet, you can watch this movie again and again.
Silver Linings' Playbook
Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper star in this 2012 hit - nominated for 7 Oscars and 4 Golden Globes. This film focuses on Pat Solitano, an ex-member of a mental institution, as he returns him to his football-loving large family in suburbia. Here he meets Tiffany (Lawrence), who has many problems of her own.
Their friendship blossoms as Tiffany enlists Pat's help in the upcoming dance competition. Day after day, the two practice - growing close, yet confused as Pat continues the search for his ex-wife Nikki. At the same time, there may be more riding on the outcome of this dance competition than just a trophy. Funny, smart and quirky - Silver Linings' Playbook is a must watch for anyone seeking a feel-good film.
Beethoven
This early 90's film stars the 185 pound St. Bernard, Beethoven. As a puppy, Beethoven joins the Newton family without a hitch. He soon grows into a large, clumsy beast of a dog. Still adorable and loving, yet disaster-prone, George Newton, played by Charles Grodin, soon has difficulty keeping the St.Bernard. He grows frustrated with Beethoven's mishaps and overlooks his heroic feats.
It is not long before Mr.Newton realizes the importance of Beethoven as a cornerstone in their family when the veterinarian starts to conduct dangerous experiments with the family dog. George must fight back to save Beethoven. Also starring Bonny Hunt as Alice Newton, this family film is loving and absolutely hysterical.
Hitch
Will Smith plays Hitch - relationship guru and match-maker to the stars. He soon finds a friend in latest client Albert - goofy, asthmatic hopeless romantic played by Kevin James. Though it seems like an impossible feat, Albert hits it off with star Allegra and Hitch rises in popularity.
That is not all Hitch must deal with though, he himself soon finds love in Sara, played by Eva Mendes. He is no stranger to relationships and knows how to win over Sara from date one. However, things don't all go according to plan. Hitch cannot keep his job a secret and word spreads about the magic he works with love. Delightful, funny and romantic - this feel-good film is great for any rainy day.
The Way Way Back
We all remember those family summer vacations. Back yard BBQ's, day trips to the pool and board games inside the cabin. These trips don't always go the way we expected though. Duncan, played by Liam James, is an introverted teen joining his mother and her boyfriend, Trent, played by Steve Carell, and his daughter. Duncan wants nothing to do with his moms boyfriend, who chooses to pick out the flaws in the young boy and belittle him.
Duncan soon finds solace in the local water park. Meeting friends, crushing on the neighbor, played by Anna Sophia Robb, and getting his first job, Duncan soon comes out of his shell. The water park cannot last forever though as the troubles at home grow and his family begins to fray. Duncan finds a way to get through alongside his encouraging mother (Toni Collette). A feel-good film that will get you off your feet - this movie is good not only in the summer, but all times of the year.
