The Lake House Movie Summary

Updated on January 24, 2013
I'll wait for two more years just to see you.
I'll wait for two more years just to see you.

"Life is not a book, Alex.."

A lonely Chigaco ER doctor, Kate Forster moves out of her beautiful lake house - built on glass and asking the new tenant, a frustrated architect Alex Wyler to forward her mail and apologizing for the paw prints on the pier.

Alex was working on a construction site nearby and found the lake house badly neglected. He reads the letter but finding no sign of life within the past five years, he ignores it until the day when he is redoing the paint and a stray dog came trotting in-- which later he calls Jack (although the dog is female).

He writes to Kate asking him more incidents and leaves the letter on the mailbox.

On Valentines Day 2006, Kate visited the lake house after a gentleman died on her arms after being hit by a truck. She found the mailbox flag is up. She reads Alex's letter and stated her address and insists that the year is 2006, not 2004, which she read. Alex went to her 'address' but instead he found a construction site which will not be finished after so many months.

They both slowly realized that the lived two years apart from each other and the only way to communicate is through the mailbox. And soon they fell in love with each other. Because Kate is in the future, she can tell Alex the specific dates and time where she is on the year 2004.

One time, she asks Alex to bring back a special thing- a book, her favorite novel, Persuasion by Jane Austen, which her father gave her- which she left on a train station after her meeting with her fiancé. He goes to the train station and finds Kate beautiful with her long hair. Although he had the book, he told her he would give it to her personally 'one way or another'.

Alex leaves her a message on a brick wall at the end written on 2004 and Kate sees his loving message on 2006, "Kate, I am here with you."

On Alex's year, he was being flirted by Mona, a young pretty assistant but he ignore her advances towards him until Jack runs off to the place where Kate and her fiancé were currently staying.

Alex was invited by Kate's fiancé to a birthday party he is holding that night for Kate. On the party, Alex and Kate danced together and share a romantic kiss. Later, when they discuss this, Kate told him that she likes him.

Crisis attacked Alex when his father dies. But Kate somehow discovers his death certificate and the time he dies. She bring it to the mailbox, as a gift to Alex, a tribute to his father, a book that is not publish on Alex's time.

Determined to bridge the distance between them, they tempted fate by arranging a time to meet together. Alex makes a reservation on a fancy restaurant in 2004 for the day in 2006. Only Kate shows up but no Alex.

Kate writes to him telling of this fact. but he says, "something must have happened." Kate surrenders telling him to move on and about the man who died on her arms on Valentines Day and that she needs to live her life and that she will never have happiness.

She said that it is impossible for them to meet. Alex, not going to give up says that he is going to wait for two more years to meet her like the story of the two lovers on her book Persuasion. But she only says that life is not a book. Kate told him not to contact her again but he pile letters to the mailbox but Kate never retrieves.

He is broken-hearted and decided to leave the lake house and put the box on the attic. Alex appears to Kate's fiancé and handed him the key of the lake house and leaves Jack behind, which became Kate's dog.

One year had passed.

December 2007, Kate and her fiancé are living together in the same address in an apartment. After going to her bedroom, the floor squeaks and irritates her. On the floorboard, she found the book Persuasion and open it where she found a pressed rose marks on it. She realized that she still love Alex but did not contact him.

Valentines Day 2008. Kate and her fiancé went to the Visionary Vanguard Associates, an upcoming young architects office to talk about the renovations of the apartment they are going to purchase.

On the building, Kate notices a beautiful painting of the Lake House and asks who did it. Harry says it was done by his bother Alex Wyler who died exactly the same day two years ago. Kate realized something, rushes to her car without a word and rushes to the lake house. She put a letter to Alex telling him to wait for her for two years and do not look for her.

Because the man who died on Kate's arms was Alex himself. Kate knows that Alex can't change her reality what has happened in Kate's reality has happened. In order for Kate's and Alex's reality to merge, Alex must meet Kate at the Lake House on February 14th 2008.

In 2006, Alex watched as Kate and her mother lunch together and smiles as the bus which was going to hit him passed by.

In 2008, the Mail Box Flag squeakily drops and Kate, previously sobbing on the ground, and behind her a truck pulls up. Out steps Alex. They share their second passionate embrace and after several minutes walk arm in arm into the Lake House.

Alex hands to her, what appears to be, a Valentines Day card.

Hahahah! you're funny. Yeah, this is one of my first hub here in HP four years ago, and I really don't know what to write that time. I just couldn't delete my pioneer hubs :)

Anyway, the movie is a little bit confusing; lovers living two years apart from each other. Kate lives in the present while Alex lives in the past..they only communicate through this letter they've sent on a malibox on Kate's lakehouse, which Alex rented.. They test the fate by meeting on one common date and time..sad though Alex had to wait years before he catch up with Kate's time. :)lol. Well, the best part, at the end, they saw each other, on valentines day.
