Well first of all let us take a look at the different types of acoustic guitar string.

Different Guitar Strings
There are three main types of acoustic guitar string. The most common of these is the Bronze Wound guitar string. These strings sounds very bright when new, they are often used for recording work. The downside of bronze wound guitar strings is that they do lose their initial brightness quite quickly. Some musicians don’t enjoy the initial sound of new strings so they use these as they soon mellow out and produce a softer sound.
Another popular choice for acoustic guitar string is Phosphor Bronze Wound. These have a very similar sound to standard bronze wound strings but they maintain the initial fresh sound for longer. The phosphor is added to the alloy and gives these a longer life. If you like your guitar to sound loud and ring for longer, then these string are ideal for what you are looking for.
Silk & Steel strings are not as common but are still a popular choice among some guitarists. The unwrapped strings are just steel and then the wrapped strings have a thin steel core surrounded by lots of nylon filaments, then are wrapped with silver plated brass windings. The idea of these strings is that it gives the guitar a softer sound and a more mellow note. One of the problems with these strings is that they don’t tend to last as long so they need to be replaced quite often.
So now we have had a look at the main varieties of acoustic guitar string, what about the gauges? When you are shopping for guitar strings it is important to know what gauge of string you are looking for.
Silk & Steel Strings
The gauge of an acoustic guitar string is basically how thick the guitar string is. The different gauges provide different sounds and also play differently. A thinker string or heavy string as it is known, will have a better sound and a nicer ring to it, however the thicker strings are harder to play. The thinner strings or light strings as they are called, are easier to play and also easier to bend. So if you are playing guitar solos where you are looking for some intricate finger work and string bending then you ideally want a lighter gauge of string.
A medium gauge set of guitar string will generally contain six strings with gauges 11, 15, 23, 30, 40 and 52. The 11 gauge is the high E string and then the 52 is the low E. When you are buying acoustic guitar strings you are often just quoted the first number in the sequence. So for instance you may want to select a set of strings with a 12 gauge. Some manufactures simply say light strings, or medium light, or medium heavy etc…. A light gauge will usually be a set of gauge 10 whereas a heavy set will be something like a 20.
Selecting the correct gauge for your guitar is very important as it will determine what your guitar sounds like and how it plays. For beginners it is recommended to use quite a light string as these are easier to play and not as painful on the fingers. More experienced players tend to use heavier strings. In the end though choosing the right string is just down to personal preference.
